RE: Elevated carbon dioxide level and plant productivity.
I wonder what is the rate of a photosynthetic process that would be able to be carried out by plants? How long would it take for a plant to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and how efficient can they provide oxygen to living things. If the concentration of carbon dioxide is on the rise, that would mean the rate at which photosynthesis processes trying to meet the metabolic demand for oxygen is failing year by year, isn't it?
Thanks for your audience. Photosynthetic rate varies from species to species and is limited by several biotic factors. Hence, it is not easy to attach a figure to it. Concerning the efficiency in relation to oxygen production, since plant themselves use oxygen during respiration, it is best calculated as net oxygen production which by all means is related to net productivity. Elevated carbon dioxide level has been found to increase photosynthesis in some species and also reduced respiration in some. It is still an active area of research.
