stemng digest: week #19

in #stemng7 years ago

If my mathematics will not be adjudged as a bit rusty, 19 weeks should be equivalent to 5 months approximately, right? Time, they say, waits for no man. It is quite amazing that a project that started like a play is now approximately 5 months old and you can all see how far we have come. Special thanks to the management and the backers of steemstem as well as all the authors that have contributed their intellectual endowments into making stemng what it is today.

For those that could be reading us for the first time, stemng is a sub-community of steemSTEM, a community-driven project which seeks to promote well-written and informative Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics posts by Nigerians on Steemit. The project involves submitting quality STEM-related posts to the steemSTEM management for upvoting and resteeming where applicable.

More information about stemng activities can be found here, while details of what it means to be part of steemSTEM can be found here, as well.

So let us set the ball rolling and see the selected posts that made our week 19 of the series.

Saturday: What Has Sleep Got To Do With The Genetic And Non-Genetic Compositions Of You?

Sleeping or its equivalent is an important process in the life of all living organisms. Every machine needs a period of rest. There exist a general consensus among scientists that in order to function optimally, humans need an average of 6hours of sleep out of every 24 hours that make up a day. Some would say sleep is for the weak. What is generally understood by sleep and how much of it do we actually need as humans? Why is it crucial and what are the health consequences of not getting the right proportion of sleep? These questions and more were answered in this lovely post by @michaelwrites. Head over and have a good read.

Sunday: Everyday Electronics part #6: The Operational Amplifiers (Op-Amp)

This post by @henrychidiebere reminds me of my junior secondary school days during which we move about with scraps of electronic components from kaput gadgets. It is the 6th episode of the series from the same author and this particular one talked about the operational amplifier. From the word 'amplifier', we all should have an idea what the article is all about. Well written, beautifully structured and makes our 2nd pick of this week.

Monday: Desalination technology:A savior Of water from water

Third on our selection for this week is this post from an author who happens to be making her debut entry into the stemng digest series. Anyone that has tasted saline ocean/sea water would know that the water is far from being consumable by humans. Imagine finding yourself surrounded by water, yet condemned to death by thirst. Thanks to technology, there are now various processes of desalinating waters. What are they and how are they carried out? Please click on the link above from @prettyprecy to get educated.

Tuesday: Proving Einstein wrong- Big Bell Test shows Einstein was wrong on spooky action at a distance

It seems this week is a week of debutants, I stand corrected. Every science person or enthusiast knows who Einstein is and how brilliantly he has contributed to science with his various discoveries. Was he right with his numerous hypothesis? Maybe not all. This post by @langford explained how the spooky action at a distance theory was challenged and disproved by a team of scientists. An interesting read I would recommend to anyone.

Wednesday: Teaching Chemistry with Analogies: Mapping Types of Bond Fission with Divorce Cases

I do not think I was totally wrong when I said this week is a week of debutants. This one would totally burst your brain (not literarily). I personally believe analogy is one of the best ways of teaching and this post by @conas emphasized that. Are you one of those people that hates chemistry? Have a peek at this post and look at how interesting chemistry could be.

Thursday : The Effects Of Digital Twins In The 4th Industrial Revolution

We all love twins. Ok, let me reframe that; some of us love twins. But wth is digital twins? Only a human robot can coin such term. Do you really want to know what it is all about and how it is related to the 4th industrial revolution? then head over to the article above from a veteran stemng author, @samminator.

Friday: What Does the Recent Discovery of Water Vapour Plumes on Jupiter's Moon - Europa, Mean?

Capping this week's selection is this lovely piece by @agbona. We humans have always lived with the notion that the earth is the only planet with life. However, scientists think otherwise and hold the notion that the universe is old enough to have more than one planets with life. We all know how important water is to life. Hence, the recent discovery of water (albeit in vapour form) in another planet threw up an interesting convo. Head over and have a good read.

Kudos to the management of this subcommunity! Writing science based article is so tasking... So time demanding. How this team is able to combine work life, their blog career and of course seeing to the needs of stemng community and larger steemstem community, beats my imagination.

We are happy for this project. Thanks guys.

Meanwhile congratulations to all those who made the list this week.
