That setup with the wooden stairs reminded me of a TV show I watched as a child, Chico and the Man. Here's a link to a screencap from the show.

The show was about a young Chicano guy who worked for this old white guy, in an old garage. Chico lived in his car in the garage. The set was made to look old, and the show was set in an old part of Los Angeles called Boyle Heights.
