A deadly experiment
The death penalty still exists today. It was not canceled in all countries. This type of punishment has remained in some states of America. Virginia is one of them. Here, especially dangerous criminals are deprived of life in the electric chair. By the way, the first person who proposed this method of execution was an ordinary dentist.
In search of a humane way
Once a man saw a man die instantly after receiving an electric shock. This method was chosen as more humane compared to hanging and guillotine. The first death penalty in the electric chair was carried out on 6.08.1890.
Over time, it turned out that this method also has many side effects and does not guarantee an instant result at all. Those sentenced to death in this way did not die immediately. I had to repeat the procedure several times. As a result, the person was literally fried to a terrible state. Sometimes criminals are offered to choose which way to say goodbye to life: injection, execution or the electric chair.
An interesting experiment
It was carried out by American doctors in one of the prisons. One criminal sentenced to death was offered to replace the punishment in the electric chair with another, less painful one. The method was that his vein would be opened, and the blood would flow out of his body gradually. At the same time, the convicted person will slowly fall asleep, and death will occur imperceptibly. Having received the consent, the doctors began to prepare.
But the meaning of the experiment was different. They decided to check how much autosuggestion affects a person in a critical situation. To conduct the experiment, they installed a device under the bed on which the man was supposed to be, simulating the sounds of dripping blood. They took a regular dropper and filled it with water.
When the convict was laid on the bed, he was made a minimal flat incision on the skin. No large vessel was affected. The man was shown blood droplets and told that after a while all the blood would leave his body. He could hear the droplets of blood slowly dripping into the vessel installed under the bed.
In fact, the sound of blood dripping was the sound of water dripping from an IV drip. The speed of the drops was adjusted using a tap. Each time, the frequency of falling drops decreased. At some point, the doctor said that there was very little blood left. After a couple of minutes, the tap was turned off, and the sounds of drops did not become audible.
What was the surprise of the doctors when, looking at the convict, they pronounced him dead. At the same time, no more than 50 ml of blood flowed out.
