Hypnotized (An Original Poem)
crack a joke, talk about the sky
put the phone down for a moment,
please, look me in the eyes.
you’re really listening,
it’s full of many wonders
ripe with lessons, glistening.
shining ‘gainst your naked skin,
try -- yes, you might fail,
but oftentimes you’ll win.
to tell someone “I love you”
reward yourself, be frivolous,
pet the dog, buy the shoes.
but our time is fading fast
soon this moment will be just a
memory, dredged up from the past.
your heart beating, sound and strong,
never gloat when you’re right,
say, “I’m sorry” when you’re wrong.
crack a joke, talk about the sky
put the phone down for a moment,
please, look me in the eyes.
friends and loved ones wonder... why?
you’re hypnotized by that glowing screen
while your life just passes by.

This is wonderful, Eric! Thanks for the dose of sanity. So many words to live by!
Thank you, Doug! There are times when I have to completely check myself and just put the phone away.
This is wonderful ! And there's such a strong message in your poem, too!
Never miss a chance to make someone happy, especially since it wouldn't cost us anything... Just a smile, a word of appreciation, a compliment to make someone's day... The importance of love and unity.
"Show this fragile world
you’re really listening,"
You paint such a beautiful picture with these few words. Amazed !
Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I was just writing a song with a similar message. Everything must be recorded, we must show the world we're living, while life actually passes by. Living in the moment is no longer the trend and soon we would only experience life digitally the way we're going.
That is so true, @lordmok! In recording the moment we miss it in so many ways.
Thought provoking and beautiful. Love how you've incorporated a message in the poem.
Never miss a chance to tell someone that you love them, and never be afraid to admit when you're wrong.
Thanks so much!
(("buy the shoes" is what hypnotized me most... ;))
But seriously - true words. And a very fitting gif.
Is there a typo in the first line of the last verse? is/it?
Lol! Thank you and I appreciate you pointing out that typo!
...you’re hypnotized by that glowing screen
while your life just passes by.
The lament of an over technologized society. Those two lines sum up 21st century America. A powerful synopsis of our culture. Well said. Kudos.
I really appreciate it, @japhofin8or!
I take pleasure in seeing the world when I'm on a train and spotting something nature has put there just for me. because all the other people on the train are engrossed in their laptops and phones. I love this poem.
Isn't that the best to just sit back, be present, and observe the world? I do this a lot when I travel. Thank you so much for your kind words!
Still, you posted this on some device, we read it on our own devices...we're hooked to the screens, no matter what.
On the other hand, it's not always bad, because screens bring people together, people you wouldn't meet otherwise.
Absolutely true! We must just try to find a healthy balance.
love this, it moved me to tears actually!
Aw, thanks Ruth! I'm glad it resonated with you. I have so many of these unpublished (on my phone of all places.) Lol.
I'm so old fashioned it took me until a few months ago to break down and get a smart phone. Being away from the glow of technology is so much more invigorating :) Thanks for the poem :)
You're welcome! I totally agree, it's so cleansing to step away from it from time to time. It's sort of like hitting a reset button..
