RE: A Geek in Prison - A Life Series by Charlie Shrem (Part 11 - Making Friends)
Staying humble is a great thing to remember. I grew up in a very diverse inner city neighborhood and was a minority in my high school. I came to high school a huge nerd (skinny, thick glasses, poor social skills). I learned early on to show interest in others and forge true friendships. I learned there are good and bad in every group so this forced me to judge people by their character over everything else. I'm so thankful for that diverse background and those lessons now that I'm in my middle years. Back in the mid-eighties (early days of Hip Hop) I made some wonderful memories being part of that culture early on. Dj'ing, break dancing, graffiti..etc. It really brought me out of my shell.
It wasn't always easy when I was living through it but think of those days often and all of the gifts I received as a result. I bet you'll reflect a lot on these memories when you're older. Great post, Charlie!
