A night visit to the Pakri Peninsula

Why does it always happen that we visit interesting places at night? I cannot answer that question, but i know there are many places from our expeditions to revisit in broad daylight and see the places in completely different way.

As always, we set out late when the last rays of the sun have sunk behind the distant wall of horizon. Our designated driver @raili has allowed us to get some beers along the road so the trip starts here. It's a 30 minute drive to Pakri Peninsula from Tallinn, the capital, but we somehow manages to squeeze more than an hour above it, perhaps two guys with beers arguing have something to do with it.

We decide to skip the town of Paldiski this time and drive along the coast. The coast is riddled with ruins of buildings from the glory days of Soviet Union. As Paldiski and the Pakri Peninsula are surrounded with deep waters, it provides unique access to both land and sea.

We visit some barracks with collapsed roofs. To be honest, due to the darkness it's hard to see the exact state of these buildings, but they seem likely to collapse soon. Trees growing in many of the rooms, have probably contributed to the barracks' demise.

Along the coast we find several of these tube-shaped constructions, hidden in plain sight between the trees. They are covered with natural ground - dirt, grass, snow. Perhaps they are bomb-shelters? We count at least 6 of these. Cannot imagine being stuck in one of these during war times.

Driving along we reach a camping area on the beach. I guess it's beautiful here during summertime. (Decide by yourself - pics here). So let's hit the beach. In the forest there is very little moonlight and besides the headlights from the car illuminating this tree, there is little to be seen.

We manage to not fall through the ice, although we suddenly find ourselves quite far on the water. Due to the deep waters around Pakri, the water doesn't freeze as much here. The weather has been getting warmer and the remaining ice doesn't feel too sturdy.... better head back to the car.

The warming weather affects our trip also in other ways. That's right... we almost get stuck in deep snow trying to drive uphill on a narrow forest road. We back off and decide to visit the tip of the peninsula in summer. Right now, we still want to visit the other side of the peninsula. So - back in the car it is.

Here we are on the other side, where the lights from the harbor shine a ghastly glow on the ruins here. It almost feels like it's even more late than we think, or rather early in the morning already.

Time's up. There's much to be seen, but our gang is getting hungry. We head back to Tallinn with a promise to visit again in the summer.
