My Best Day in School
In Nigeria, it is common to see an average student having a pair of phones, the "big" one and the "small" one, as most people like to refer to them. The big one is usually an android phone that is used to surf the internet for assignments and to keep up with social media, while the the small phone is strictly for calls and text messages. You need not search too far afield to understand the reason behind that and in fact most Nigerians have come to accept this as the norm rather than the exception. This is because of erratic power supply in the country. One can afford to have a O% battery in his big phone while he answers calls with the smaller phone.
It was around 2pm after a day's lectures and class practical, we decided to get ready for a quiz scheduled 2.30pm in a classroom named 'Complex 1' whose capacity was 150 people. We were approximately 170 students. Therefore, it was clear to every right thinking person in our class that we are going to have a spill over of at least 20 students who would be condemned to take the quiz standing and that's not considering the fact that some of the seats were damaged.
We waited patiently outside the practical hall while having a clear vision of 'complex 1' classroom. After a few minutes, I could see the class representative popularly known as 'class rep' moving in a zig zag direction so we won't see him as he unlocked the classroom. Unfortunately for him, some of us stood up which signalled that the classroom was about being unlocked and in less than 30 seconds, everyone was running towards the classroom and before 40 seconds, we all stormed the classroom.
Fortunately, I secured a seat but something wasn't right. I just checked my two pockets and I couldn't feel my second phone, that was my small phone where I had all my contacts. Immediately, I asked the person seated next to me to secure my seat as I exited the classroom in search of my small phone. I searched and checked every corner but to no avail. So, I decided not to miss the quiz and went back to the classroom for the quiz.
After the quiz, we called it a day and I decided to dial the phone number to see if anyone would answer. Luckily, it rang and I heard a male voice with instruction to come to a particular office on the campus. I went straight to the office and met a young man, a school technician, he asked for the phone details for confirm if it was really mine and when I gave him all the correct answers, he handed the phone to me and said, "Go, my friend''. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face as I said, ''Thanks a lot''. I said to myself as I left the office, ''This is too easy. How can it be?"
I switched on the phone and started checking for few things before it rang and another male voice commanded me to come to the engineering laboratory immediately, I had a strange feeling that it wasn't just my phone that got lost, so I checked my bag and behold my wallet filled with bank notes and debit cards was not there.
I drove off with my motorcycle to the engineering laboratory and found two young men seated in front of the laboratory and they asked if I am the one they called and I replied yes. They told me the found my cell number from the wallet. They gave me my wallet and when I opened it, it was intact with no money removed. I looked at them to see if they were crazy and they laughed at me, and I asked, ''To what do I owe for this rare favour and kindness? '' One of them said I should split the money into two and let them have half. I said okay even though it's a huge amount to give out but I didn't want to seem ungrateful, so I started counting the money before the second guy said, ''Stop, we are just messing with you, just be careful next time as you shouldn't expect to meet people like us everyday''.
My heart was filled with joy as I was driving home, not just because I found my lost items but just like the good Samaritan told me, it's not everyday I get lucky, it's not everyday I see good people and definitely not everyday that's my best day.
So I had a thought, since it was my lucky day, I might as well give betting a try. So instead of riding back to my lodge, I went to a bet shop and split the money in my purse in to, placed a bet on my favourite games of the day and went home. I prepared lunch, ate and slept off. I woke up by 7:05 am to find that out of the five games I betted on, one of the teams lost and there went my lucky day. That was the last day I depended on luck but now and then, an Angel smiles and everything in life works out just right.
