The Lion Hunter (An Original Flash Fiction)
Are the gods angry? Have we offended the gods? Is the world coming to an end? Is this is a new reality that we have to accept? Will this happen again tomorrow? This and more questions emanated from the lips of the villagers, who were walking about and talking in peers.
Okoro one of Obeke’s finest hunters, on his way to the forest decided to check if his friend Okpara was ready for today’s hunting exercise, while approaching Okpara’s compound Okoro was shocked to see Okpara sitting, Okpara screamed “Okoro where are you going to?” Okoro replied as you can see I am going hunting and why are you not ready? Okpara sounding worried said the excessive sunlight implied a very bad day, Okoro hissed aloud not wanting to be discouraged quickly left Okpara’s compound to the forest.
After going deep into the forest Okoro carefully took his steps not to hint any animal of his presence, after doing so for a while Okoro was angry that he hadn’t seen any animal since he entered the forest which is unusual, he then persisted deeper into the forest, still there was no sight of even a small animal like the rabbit which wasn’t his interest as a veteran hunter. Suddenly Okoro’s eyes saw what looked like a lions eye looking back at him, and reality clearly struck him when the lion roared, Okoro quickly pointed his gun at the lion and having been satisfied that he had gotten a good target of the lion, he used all the strength in his body to pull the trigger, he didn’t hear the sound of his gun, he pulled the trigger again and the gun was only like carved wood with added metallic design bringing forth no bullet, then Okoro’s mouth became bitter.
