My Nation and I

in #story7 years ago (edited)

Let me tell you a little about my country and how I relate to her.

Nigeria is the largest black nation, the pride of Africa. She is a federal republic in west Africa, surrounded by Cameroon and Chad in the East,Benin in the West,Niger in the north,it's coast in the south lies on the gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic ocean.

Nigeria comprises of 36 states with about 500 spoken languages. She is popularly known for the exportation of crude oil, cocoa and wood. She gained her independence on October 1st,1960.

I am a Nigerian by birth, would have missed if it was by choice. Years ago I wished I could close my eyes, open it and find myself as a citizen of some other country, everything about Nigeria seemed wrong to me,poverty, unemployment, bad leadership, poor educational system ,bad roads, corruption, name it all.

Since there was no escape,I hoped and waited for a change, I didn't wait too long to realise that I got it all wrong, the change I seeked was there in me,I didn't have to depend on anyone to bring to birth my own dream country, I didn't need political power to empower myself and those around me.

I started viewing my Nation from a different point of view, I realised that even on the streets lies gold which I couldn't see earlier because I was blinded.

I realised that all I needed to succeed was within me and in my own little way, I could make a great impact for my beloved country.

I began to see the good side of Nigeria, freedom, right to worship, very rare cases of natural disaster, love among citizens, democracy, her citizens can adapt to any place and circumstance,"there is a saying that if you travel round the globe, you must find a Nigerian everywhere ", we are hardworking, Intelligent (most Nigerians that travel abroad to study win scholarships ), strong and beautiful women, creative men,I could go on and on. I love and pledge to Nigeria my country.

Oh my goodness! This is a lovely piece, @jeaniepearl. I'm glad that I got to see this through, @steem-lagos' weekly giveaway contest. The content is very good. A few parts that I like, ''Since there was no escape,I hoped and waited for a change, I didn't wait too long to realise that I got it all wrong, the change I seeked was there in me,I didn't have to depend on anyone to bring to birth my own dream country, I didn't need political power to empower myself and those around me.'' How very true! The change we seek is there in us...Second ''...we are hardworking, Intelligent (most Nigerians that travel abroad to study win scholarships ), strong and beautiful women, creative men,''. I can relate to this as well. Thank you very much for being a patriotic Nigerian. Well done!!!
