In a suburb of Kiev, during the Communist dictatorship, a child lives with parents and grandmother. The economic situation is serious: running water is lacking and food is scarce. They decide to emigrate to the US, while their father stays in Kiev to work.

In California, they live in a miserable two-room apartment and find a canteen for the homeless to eat. The little boy finds a job in a supermarket.

With the money he earns he buys a flight to finally see his father again, but receives a sudden call: his father is dead.

But there is a fire that burns within him. He wants to redeem a wretched life. It makes no sense to cry on yourself for the rest of the day.
