The establishment of the Indian Army was soon after India attained independence in 1947. Most of the regiments were allowed to stay in British Raj's time. As a member of United Nations Peace Keeping Force, the Indian Army has made outstanding contributions in most of the world's war and conflict-affected areas. It is a valuable experience of the war in different geographical areas due to the country's geographical differences. General Vijay Kumar Singh is the current chief of the Thalassena. Field Marshal's position in the Indian Army is considered the highest. This is an honorary post which is provided by the President on the recommendation of the Central Government, but it is recommended only in specific circumstances. In the history of six decades of Indian Army, only two officers have been given the rank of Field Marshal.
