SteemHeroes Season 1, Episode 6 - An unexpected discovery

A new dimensional fissure just opened up outside of Las Cruces, New Mexico. A well-known Blackrogue cluster operates in the area, so its assumed they’re responsible for cracking open this new portal.

The Council assembled a small team to investigate and close the fissure, so Armadillo, Mardax and Background were assigned to this mission and directed to leave immediately.

Within 30 minutes, the three met up on the Council’s helipad just outside of the HQ building. Background has already taken the pilot seat. His military training has shaped him into a skilled pilot.

“Hey guys! Are you ready to get out there?” says Dillo, who is always excited when he’s called up for a mission. His voice is surprisingly high pitched for such a large man, and it features a slight lisp that makes him hard to take seriously by many of the senior Counselors.

”As always, yes.” Mardax replies, before pointing to the chopper. ”Get in there big man.”

Dillo’s enthusiasm is either endearing or annoying, depending on which Counselors you’re asking. Command has wisened up and stopped sticking Dillo with members like Mandrake and Gust who don’t have the patience to deal with Dillo’s childlike excitement.

”Buckle up boys” utters Background as he fires up the chopper. They all settle in as the blades begin to spin and the helicopter takes flight. Being just a few hundred miles, the flight takes around 3 hours. While Background is completely focused on piloting, Mardax and Dillo pass the time by playing games on their mobile phones.

They reach the area of the fissure around dusk and Background is able to find a clearing to put the chopper down safely. Each of them hops out and Dillo grabs the containment gear.

”The fissure should be about 300 yards south” says Background. They each look at each other and nod, before starting the short hike to the coordinates of the fissure.

”Keep your eyes peeled for anything out of the ordinary” says Mardax. ”Remember what happened in Thailand?”

They all nod and continue hiking forward, but a bit more slowly.

A few minutes pass and they hear commotion ahead where the fissure should be. “I hear somethin up there” blurts Dillo. ”Yeah, someone is still there…or beat us to it” replies Background. ”Be extra careful and quiet on the approach.”

As they near the fissure, they hear more and more noise. As they crest a small hill, they see the fissure is still open, crackling and buzzing with unstable energy. What they see next is a huge surprise.

In the clearing around the fissure is ten portable containment cells. They look exactly like the containment cells The Council uses, but they’re larger and a bit different in a few minor details. They can see that most of the cells are occupied, either by humanoid or alien creatures and they’re struggling to break free.

Surrounding the fissure are three individuals. As they get a bit closer, they can identify the insignias on their clothing.

These are three members of The Grove.

As the three Counselors realize who they’ve stumbled across, one of the figures turns to them and smiles.

“Welcome Counselors. Would you like to come down and give us a hand?”
