COMING OUT OF THE CLOSET

in #story7 years ago (edited)

Coming out of the closet is difficult to say the least, especially when staying in feels secure!

Recently, it occurred to me, I've spent a great deal of my life in closets. They have been my friend, confidant, protector, hiding place, refuge, library, punishment, and the list goes on!

During my childhood, we lived in a large rustic house with rooms the size of salons and closets to get lost in! Nothing fancy, but adequate for a growing family!

Three sisters shared a bedroom with two beds. Two sisters shared one closet in the room, and I was given a closet all to myself across the hall. Being a walk in closet, unusual in those days, I was ecstatic.

I stashed all my treasures in that closet along with clothes, shoes, hats, books, and anything else I owned. Hidding places concealed diaries and other paraphernalia from my mother (or so I thought)!

I used my closet for dressing to attain some degree of privacy. If there had been room for a bed, that's the place I would have slept. Come to think of it, I do remember napping a few times.

When my sisters and I got into arguments and scuffles, my mother sent me to the closet. Ha! Little did she know, I didn't mind at all. She thought of it as punishment, I thought of it as peace and quite!

My closet became my private library! Adding a small red rocker was perfect for reading. I found a key to the door and kept the door locked so no one could invade my space.

Of course, snacks, water and flashlights were hidden, in case I got locked in! My own private bomb/storm shelter was established!

Other kids hid in outdoor tree houses and/or clubhouses, I had my closet! When anyone was looking for me, they knew where to find me.

As a grown woman, I still love the closet scene. Living in a condo unit in the middle of two other units gives the sense of a large closet, only with plenty of light. When storms occur in our area, I have a secure place.

The condo has a large walk-in closet where I spend time, reminiscent of my childhood days. A sitting area is perfect for getting dressed, reading, and applying makeup.

There is plenty of storage room for clothes, shoes, hats and other necessities. Sitting and going through old picture albums is a favorite pastime.

My closet is the warmest room in the house, so I tend to gravitate towards it when cold weather hits. That's where I go when tornado warnings are issued. Yes, I keep water, flashlights, and snacks hidden away...just in case! Don't judge me...it's my happy place!!

So, if anyone looks for me, they might find me "coming out of the closet!!"

Now those are some closets! I love your little play on words/ideas. I always like the clever turns your writing takes.

Gets people's attention so maybe they will read it......LOL!

Didn't Dracula live in a closet? No, wait, that was a coffin! Ha! I like your memories @sunnieside, they are genuine and unique! This made me think of the Forts we used to make in the woods behind our house.
CARRY ON

Well, I wasn't ready for a coffin then and still not ready! LOL, so I think I'll just stick to closets! Thanks for dropping by!
