Once upon a time, the history of Street Art ... #1

My dear Steemians!

Today I want to talk to you about Steet art!

As you know I live in Barcelona for almost a year, I like art in general but I love Street art. That's why I went on a tour organized by "free graffiti Tour Barcelona". I thank our guide "Héloïse" for passing on all this knowledge, we had a great time!
I will share with you my Steemians friends, what I learned during this visit!

Are you ready???

1- What is Street Art?

Street art brings together all forms of art made in the street or in public places.
It is mainly an ephemeral art. Indeed, the work can be deteriorated by the climatic conditions, but also by the passers-by who can vandalize it or tag over it for example.
Photography allows you to keep a record of the work before it is damaged. The specificity of this art is also that we do not always know the identity of the artists.

2- Why do Street Art artists hide their identity?

Many Street Art artists hide their identities for legal reasons as it is illegal to display or damage public or private properties. For all that, the Street Art artist's approach is not to break everything, but to claim that the public space can be a means of expression for art, to change people's perception of their art. city, their neighborhood, their society.

The art museum is not accessible to all, unlike the street which is a support that can reach everyone, all ages and all social classes.
Anonymity also participates in the artists' communication strategy, ie creating an image of Superheroes or masked vigilantes.

3- Street art include various techniques and varied forms of expression

✏ Graffiti: involves putting a picture or words on a surface. There are different forms of graffitis:

  • The tag: it's a signature with a single color
  • The throw up: it is a signature with a level higher than the tag (between 2 and 3 colors) but still fast to paint.
  • The piece: it is the most advanced level of tag with between 4 and 6 colors.
  • The mural
  • The stencil: a technique of reproduction of logos, advantageous because fast and precise
  • Posters or collage: a technique long established in popular culture, it is a simple and effective means of communication.

✏ Object installations in the street:

  • The stickers: advantageous technique because the transport is not binding, in the pocket of jeans or a coat. It is inexpensive fast to stick and spreads easily in the city.
  • The deterioration of supports: is a recent technique of Street Art which consists in attacking the walls no longer with the bomb to be tagged, but with real bombs, or a jackhammer.
  • Digital projects in the street: consist of embedding USB keys in the facade of buildings allowing passersby to download the files they contain and create an anonymous network of file sharing in the public space.

4- When does the street art date?

Street art is recognized today as a movement of contemporary art. Yet contrary to what one might think, in the history of art, of the humanity of the whole world men and
Women have always had the need to leave inscriptions that convey political, religious, or personal messages.
So it's an art movement that has been recognized in the
70s, but it must be remembered that drawing is one of the oldest practices inherent in Man.

  • The Chauvet cave. On the site of Chauvet Cave in Ardèche, we found a thousand paintings and engravings, dating back to the time of Paleolithic.

  • The first political cartoons were found in Pompeii at the time of antiquity.
  • 1940 An American worker named Kilroy, who was working in a Detroit-based bomb factory, writes "Kilroy was here" on parts that run along his production line. The bombs are then dropped with this ironic slogan. Kilroy has talked a lot about him. Hitler thought he was an American spy infiltrated by the Nazis!

This story lays the foundations of the graffiti culture: the taste of the message, which gives meaning to the work, and the virality that allows being seen by the greatest number. Graffiti is a little Internet before the time!

This is the end of this first article in the series on Steet Art. In the next article, I will show you the works of artists that can be found in Barcelona and I will tell you their story!

😲Wow, these arts are pretty impressive. I sometimes feel very sad 😔 that many talented people like the street artists are not getting the recognition that they truly deserve. Nice pics, my favourite, old woman at the bottom. Also, I was quite innovative what you did with the plumbing(before -> after ) if I have got it correctly.
