Chinese Chess on the Streets of Saigon, Vietnam 🇻🇳

Street chess in Vietnam.jpg

A familiar sight on the streets of Vietnam. These men were deep in thought playing Chinese Chess (Xiangqi). I asked the men if they minded me taking a photo, they glanced at me for a split second, agreed then got back to their game. No time for small talk 😂

They were sitting on Pasteur Street in District 1, Saigon. It's a very lively area with many tourists and locals socialising on a Saturday night. I'd just finished drinking a local craft beer named "Devils Lake" in a fairly relaxed rooftop bar named Rouge, a decent bar that had a DJ playing some chilled tunes.

I hope you have all had a nice weekend!

Keep it real

I need to learn how to play. I'm a fan of board games and this looks fun.

Interesting to see the comparison - this is how these two Vietnamese men spent their Saturday night compared to two middle aged men in England might be at the pub on the beers watching the footie or Six Nations (really depends on people's lifestyle). It's cultural different for sure.

Sometimes they can gather quite the crowd when playing. I know what you mean about the comparison. I'd just finished a beer with my friend and these guys are sitting there at 10.30 playing chess. I loved it!

Although I'm a chess player at my school some Chinese students tought me to play Chinese chess really interesting but also very different to chess. The characters confuse me the most. I am very glad to see these kind of people comit to the game. Great post love it!
