When Ecuadorian Kids With No Education Are Smarter Than You

This picture was taken the first time I ever left the country. It was the trip that changed my life forever and made me into the traveling, restless hobo that I am today.

I never met these kids personally. But based on the many Ecuadorian kids I met, I know these two were beyond amazing. I was in a small town called Playas. No one ever goes there for tourism really. I was there to help teach kids, give shoes and clothes, etc.

The people in this town literally live in stick huts with dirt floors. A lot of them didn't have shoes.

Many of them couldn't pay to go to school (they have to pay for books and uniforms). I sponsored one to go to school.

One lady was so desperate, she kept trying to give me her baby and telling me to take it back to the US with me.

I tried to explain that I was only 19, unmarried, and still had to go to college. I don't think she understood.

You can imagine these kids didn't have a lot to play with. Yet, despite having almost nothing, the people in this town were some of the happiest and most generous people I'd ever met.

That's when I started realizing that material things don't matter.

Besides being happy and generous, they were also so smart and resourceful! I couldn't believe it when I saw these kids playing with a kite they had made out of sticks and newspaper! I would have never been able to figure that out as a kid.

Thought I'd share their adorable faces with you all :)

I was inspired to do this photo because of the Friday street photography by @juliank!

I love the conclusion in your article. The world for me is exactly THIS. It is not about wealth or power or fame. It is about people and the question on how we all can have a good, pleasant life where we encourage each other and make each other happy and feel welcome on this earth. I will defenitly go through your blog and see what else I may find :)

Thanks! Glad you're with me on that one

One lady was so desperate, she kept trying to give me her baby and telling me to take it back to the US with me.

Awwww, so sad. :( I haven't even been near these situations. This shows that you actively look to get involved with the cases where you want to help. I want to be like that, but I haven't done anything to get there (I haven't been active, always trying to get myself out of trouble instead of helping others).

It's hard to change my lifestyle when I'm so focused on getting my feet off the quicksand. Maybe this shows why society degenerates into such inequalities. :(

@cryptosharon Wow, that's interesting, it really does show that I guess! Because I'd imagine in Venezuela you'd see that without having to look very far. I guess I thought wrong (or I read way too much about how to escape Venezuela on the internet the other day, haha, so I read about some pretty desperate situations).

Staying out of trouble is helping yourself :) So look at it that way, haha. There's a saying that you can't pour from an empty cup. It basically just means that you have to fill up your own cup (help yourself) to have anything to give others.

You will get out of the quickstand. I hope steemit helps you out of the quicksand. You deserve it.

No, no, you're right lol. There's a looooot of that in Venezuela. I just don't leave my house like, almost ever. It's even unhealthy for me. I see a lot of people eating from the trash, wearing broken clothes.

But I'm also at the capital, in what whe call "el este del este", which is the richest side of the city. We're in the poor part of a rich neighborhood, but we're still much better off than people in other states, other cities, and even other parts of this city.

I'll try and get myself out of my quicksand quickly to join the help parties going around the country. I've seen many charities and nfp orgs that do a lot of work in other states. I want to give a big helping hand once I can. :3 Thank you for the inspiration <3 And for wishing me well. I'm flattered that you think that.

Oh true, it's not even safe for you to leave the house! :( Please stay safe... you've been the most amazing person I've met on Steemit. That's right, people. You read it...go follow her!

People eating from the trash breaks my heart!!! Seriously, if I had tons of money I would just adopt 10,000 kids (and adults haha) and take care of them all.

So far all I've managed to do is start a failing non-profit haha.

I'm a loyal follower of the saying

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Even though my big brother prefers

Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

😂😂😂

Jokes aside, I truly believe that charities should help set up the foundations for a community to rise, be independent and leave misery on its own, instead of just throwing money at it and expect it to grow into a beautiful tree.

jaja your brother, chistoso. I totally love and agree with that fish saying, too! Totally agree with the charity thing, also. That's part of what I wanted my non-profit to do, was educate people. Hopefully someday

This made me realized how blessed I am to be able to school. :) Thanks for sharing this.

I read an article about some kids in rural areas Philippines who swim across a river to get to school every day. I hope you don't have to swim to school!

They always need help from everyone :(

I used to fly kites when I was small. Childhood memories

kite toy simple but fun, look at the boy is very happy and happy ...
