Counting Stars

Hey everyone. As some of you may have read, One of my goals here on Steemit it to provide an outlet for suicide prevention. This year has been extremely traumatic for me. I lost my best friend to suicide in April, and lost 2 friends to drug overdoses during the year. These loses turned my life around and opened my eyes up to a universe I thought I would never have to face. Today, to honour those who have lost their lives, I will share a poem I wrote for my best friend. I hope for her to be resting peacefully. I can feel her spirit shining on my every single moment of every single day.

This is a poem I wrote called "Counting Stars". I hope for those of you who have lost a loved one to suicide, or lost someone close to you through sickness, accident, or any other means, that this poem can touch you and give you the support you need.

"Counting Stars"

she took one step forward
to step out of the dark.
It chased her step
leaving a shadow beneath her foot.
she took one step forward
to be closer to the light.
it dimmed as she moved into it
leaving a question at her feet.

she closed her eyes and prayed
for time to hold her hand.
clasped her hands together
as her hand was her best friend.

she asked the moon to stay awake
for just a while more
so she could count the stars above
and hold you just once more.

she cried for no one, not one tear,
a dry forgotten eye.
she climbed the tallest tree
longed for mountains way up high.
she fell beneath the wind
and lost her vision of the sky
so tried to dance a top the earth
and create her own time.
