Tardigrades: Earth's Most Resilient Creatures
Tardigrades, also known as "water bears," are among the most resilient creatures on Earth.
These microscopic organisms can survive extreme conditions, such as:
Extreme temperatures: From -272°C to +150°C.
Vacuum: They can survive in the vacuum of space.
Radiation: They withstand radiation hundreds of times greater than the lethal dose for humans.
Dehydration: They can lose up to 97% of their body water and survive for years.
When a tardigrade becomes dehydrated, it enters a state called "cryptobiosis," where its life processes nearly come to a halt. However, when it comes into contact with water again, it can come back to life.
In 2019, thousands of tardigrades were sent to the Moon aboard a spacecraft, which crashed on the lunar surface. Some of these tardigrades might still be alive on the Moon! 🪐
These creatures inspire scientists to explore the boundaries of life in extreme environments. Fascinating, isn’t it? 😊
