“We must not look at goblin men,
We must not buy their fruits:
Who knows upon what soil they fed
Their hungry thirsty roots?”
—Christina Rossetti, Goblin Market

In the poem, Goblin Market, two sisters are tempted by goblins to a sumptuous feast of enchanted fruit. The catch is that once a human tastes goblin fruit, they will remain under its spell, wasting away with an insatiable hunger. The only cure in Rossetti’s poem is once you’ve eaten goblin fruit, you can lick the juice off of a loved one’s skin—but the loved one must be strong enough to withstand temptation of eating the fruit themselves.

Today is a day of where the lure of daydream is particularly strong—to the point of distraction. You may be thinking about trying some goblin fruit for yourself, or of a time when you once indulged and perhaps you haven’t quite felt the same since. But if you consider this temptation carefully, you’ll remember that goblin fruit is tainted with a little glamour, a little bit of the phenomenal world that will end in a dark ride. Goblin fruit is an illusion meant to take you off course. If you take some time to calculate the ultimate cost for indulging in fantasy today, you may find that goblin fruit is best left where you found it. You do have mastery over whatever tempts you with empty promises of making you feel whole. By the day’s end, you will find that what you are seeking is not a fleeting spark but a consistent and sustainable flame. Today is one of those days where tuning into your gut will pay off not just for the moment, but the rest of the year ahead.
