Trekking Nepal (Part 3) - Landslides

in #teamaustralia6 years ago

Like most other trekkers...

Our Annapurna Circuit adventure began with a bus ride from the lakeside town of Pokhara to Besisahar.

If I can offer one peace advice for this bus ride, and for life in general: DO NOT choose a seat directly over the rear axle... your vertebrae will thank you!

A common practice for the time pressed tourist is to hire Jeep transport and boost it straight to Chame

However, being a little early in the season in Mid September, the Monsoon rains were still falling and many of the roads were blocked by landslides. This left us with no choice but to make like Pantera and Walk.

The next several hours involved a significant amount of scrambling over rocks and wading through knee deep mud. At the time the adrenaline and excitement were calling the shots, but looking back, one mis-step or a further landslide could have easily resulted in my final resting place being somewhere on the banks of the raging river below.

Up until the point where I took this next photo... I had selfishly been thinking of the landslides as an inconvenience... it was in this village that their impact really sunk in. Six people had been killed here and multiple homes were destroyed. As the locals worked tirelessly to repair the roads I couldn't but think that a month from now excited tourists would be whizzing past in the back of a Jeep, blissfully unaware of the heartache these families had been through.
