AI interest is at an all-time high and it feels like this technology is brand new. In fact, it has a long and interesting history stretching back to the dawn of computing in the 1800's! Today's latest deep learning applications have been centuries in the making as people have been thinking about how to get intelligence out of computers for quite some time. Moreover, as we cover in this episode, deep learning and statistical machine learning methods are really only one branch of a field that encompasses logical inference, expert systems, evolutionary methods, system dynamics and more! It's truly a fascinating and far reaching field and is certainly worth looking at the history that got us here.

Really interesting stuff! Where did you get most of the historical information? Any good articles out there?

Check out AI by Margaret Boden. Also, Norvig and Russell have a nice historical overview at the opening of their book. There's also the Cambridge Handbook of AI which has two good chapters on the history. But Boden's book is definitely a good place to start.
