Why it matters: anyone impressed by special effects in the Jurassic Park, Terminator 2 and The Abyss movies should thank Chicago native Marc Hannah. The computer scientist was one of the founders, in 1982, of the software firm Silicon Graphics (now SGI), where the genius of special effects developed a technology of three-dimensional graphics that would be used in many Hollywood films.

Silicon Valley has its roots among many "non-conformist" people. In the 1960s and 1970s, many followers of Sri Hans Ji Maharaj and Sri Prempal Rawat later joined the Software startups and became known as Computer Gurus.
