Bye bye iPhone, hello Oppo F7 ✅📲

Bye bye iPhone, hello Oppo F7.png

Apple revolutionised the smartphone market 10 years ago when they launched the iPhone.

We all know that the last 10 years have been incredible in the tech world.

Has Apple lost its edge???

Their ability to innovated and make the user experience seamless between their products, cannot be compared.

It's seamless!

I'm an Apple geek for sure, but recently, that excitement for everything new has left me.

When the iPhone X was released with its premium pricing I'd expected more. The reality was that it just didn't innovate enough! Yeah, it has a big screen and... and...

Not enough that I'd go and spend over $1000 for!

The iPhone 7 I have is fully functioning and generally a good phone, so decided to keep it.

BUT then...

After a visit to the local phone shop to replace my screen protector, I decided to play around with the phones.

Oppo
A Chinese company that has very aggressively advertised here in Vietnam, They position their phones right in the middle of the smartphone market. Not the cheapest, but not the most expensive.

After handling and playing around with the Oppo F7 I was blown away by this attractive feature-rich smartphone.

It is marketed as the best Selfie camera on the market, it's smart Ai 25megapixel front facing camera spiked my curiosity.

That wasn't my reason for wanting it, more the leaps and bounds that have been made by the Android operating system. It's just so clean now, compared to only a year or two ago.

It didn't take long and I was handing over my hard earn Vietnam Dong!

8,000,000vnd ($350 or £260)

Main features of the Oppo F7 are

  • SIM FREE
  • Android 8.1 (Oreo)
  • Display 6.23 inches, 96.9 cm2 (~82.5% screen-to-body ratio)
  • 16mp rear camera F1.8
  • 25mp front facing camera
  • 64GB internal storage
  • Dual sim card with expandable SD card up to 256GB
  • Rear fingerprint sensor with facial recognition
  • 3400 mAh battery

It's a really decent spec at a quick glance, the phone looks like an iPhone X, as it has the notch out the top of the screen. More and more companies are opting for this, to realise the maximum available space on the front of the screen. After about 4 days using it, it's never bothered me.

Cons
This is a list of things that are annoying me at the moment about the changeover. Probably not as much as I expected.

  • iMessage (I can still use on Mac, but miss the messages on the go)
  • Apple watch (I've not figured out if I can sync it yet, doesn't look likely)
  • iCloud storage
  • Apple Music
  • iPhoto storage

Pros
These are the main things that are making me happy about the changeover.

  • Affordable
  • Larger screen (great for videos and browsing the web)
  • Dual Sim
  • Smart AI camera (I've not fully tested the camera yet, first impressions are good)
  • Google apps (excellent here in Vietnam as most people share files through Google Drive)
  • Gesture controls for lock screen, quick access to favourite apps
  • Swipe gestures
  • App clone allows cloning of Whatsapp, Viber etc. great when you want business and personal separate
  • Zing MP3 (free app for music here in Vietnam)
  • Google apps (Gmail, calendar, sheet, docs, keep)
  • Google assistant (excellent and much better than Siri)

There are a ton of other things I think are awesome, but I'll leave that for another post after I play around a bit more.

For now, I have no regrets the Oppo is a cracking phone with a great screen and loads of useful features.

What do you have? Apple or Android??

Have you made the leap? Are you bored with Apple's recent lack of innovation?

Thanks for reading folks. Good to be back writing again on Steemit

Keep it real
Derek

Sorry but the problem of deciding whether to take an Apple or an Android is in my operating system. Sounds silly but Apple is just safer. Not every dork can bring out an app for Apple without this is decently checked. A real innovation would certainly be something completely new to make a difference.

A real innovation for Apple would be to allow users to have control over the devices that they spend so much money on. You can't even repair your own iPhone without risking a lawsuit.

Apple's safety comes at the cost of freedom. I prefer freedom.

There are many things about Apple I love. Security one of the biggest ones. I've used Apple about 10 years. I feel they are fallen behind a bit stale nowadays. I feel Google have improved their Apps so much lately, making in flawless when working. Cheers

Nice read. I leave an upvote for this article thumbsup

Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to read it?

Glad to see you back!

You forgot the greatest Pro of all, never having to use iTunes again!

Sorry, I know some people actually like iTunes, but it has always been like cancer on my computers. Once the unreplaceable battery (thanks Apple!) on my ipod touch dies, I hope to never use iTunes again.

I did like the interface on my ipod, and it used to be super snappy compared to anything else on the market, but it bothers me how controlling Apple is with MY device.

I love being able to plug my Android phone into my computer for the first time, and not have to install anything. I can open it up like a thumb drive and move files on and off of my phone in seconds. I don't need an account with anyone, I don't need a credit card, just the USB cable. If I want to load up on movies before a flight, I just copy them over to my phone, no converting and no itunes. If you love the music on my phone, I can just give you a copy of the mp3s, no crazy iTunes tricks, and no workarounds. Android allows you to do what you want with your own property.

Some of the Cons on your list are why I try to only use 3rd party services like Dropbox and Flickr. Just in case I jump ship, I don't want Google controlling all my stuff. But it is getting harder and harder, Google offers some pretty nice services.

I hope the new phone works out for you. It sounds like a pretty good deal. I hope you'll take a few photos with it, and maybe some video for a post. I'm curious to see how it performs in those departments.

Cheers mate! Good to be back, iTunes does suck. I was paying £9.99 for music each month, couldnt even change from UK iTunes to Vietnam iTunes otherwise I'd have lost all paid apps.

I bit the bullet and happy for now, like you that freedom of just taking back control without having to jump through hoops in what felt like a prison. Even yesterday, I wanted to set up my iCloud email on the phone, Android wasn't playing, said wrong password bla bla. Turns out you need to login to iCloud.com and request a private password for certain app use. Great for security! But I tried logging into iCloud website and it didn't load, wheel of death then server error! Turns out the Virus protection on my computer was stopping me from accessing the website. Finally got in, set up app specific password and now have my email through Gmail on the phone the last step in my changeover.

I'm looking at having a photo session on Saturday to test it out followed by a post here. It's an impressive phone for sure!

This was from the other night from my classroom. Only real photo I have so far :)

Catch ya soon mate!

The photo looks pretty darn good!

I've seen a youtube video about how the Chinese are going to town with improving Android as well as making better-than-Apple iPhone clones. I wonder if I can get one of those Oppo phones in America. My phone's camera has several dead pixels that annoy me.

Yeah, they are so agressive here, there's so many brands all look much the same, I was very close to buying a Huawei https://www.thegioididong.com/dtdd/huawei-nova-3e it looked good and was comparable on most features of the Oppo, but in the hand it felt cheap, and the interface wasn't so good to navigate. I've since learned you can get different launchers for Android.

If there is something you want, I could probably buy and send for you.

what about the AI? Is that sketch in any way? That's my only worry kinda.

TBH, everything is using AI is someway or another. I have just come to accept it. If not i'll not be able to use any electronics. AI on the camera just improves your photos, so it's very clever and improves the photo qualities over time.

lol this is why I liked android from the start. These things always annoyed me with apple haha. Same! @derekcowan take pics and vids, I need to see if they're steemit worthy! lol

Haha yeah, I'm liking the camera so far, lets see when I really put it to the test.

Wow, perfect timing on this @derekcowan! I'm in Vietnam and just got my phone stolen, sooo I'm in the market to buy a new one. Def please take pics. I don't have a camera like a real adult yet, so I tried to have a decent phone camera for steemit content purposes.

Dumb question, but you said it has "no sim" and also a "dual sim?" What's a dual sim?

Ah sorry to hear that! yeah, there are lots of really good phones out right now. I'll be taken lots of photos at the weekend and post on Sunday.

No Sim, just means without a contract with any particular network. Free to use on any network, in any country. Dual Sim just means you can have 2 sim cards in your phone.

Sam is also on the same page as you, but he has an iPhone 5. He can't afford the latest ones and he doesn't think it is worth the price. However, he is really attracted to the Samsung S9 (9+) and all its features. It didn't help that he did a Uni presentation on the product two months' ago. Still, not buying anything yet as his phone is still fully functional, even if it's a bit slow and he had to delete many apps. His priority is his six year old laptop that has become a Desktop as the hinges won't close properly. Yet, again, the laptop works, so why change it.

Hope you have a blast with the Oppo and we're sure we'll see photos in the future (on Steepshot)! :)

The Samsung looked great, best you can get on Android by the looks of it. I'm lucky my iPhone 7 used is worth more than the new Oppo F7 so zero cost to change. I have spent all my spare time setting up to run alongside my teaching and other interests. I plan to give the camera a good test over the weekend. Goodnight from Vietnam :)

We'll have a shop around when the time comes, but happy with what we have so far 😊

Hopefully, you're spending the right amount of energy in the right place. With so much going on in our lives, it's key to conserve your time and energy to what truly matters. With that being said, have a great day! 😊

You're so right! have a great day too :)
