LED strips galore! Controlling 18K LEDs with Arduino/Teensy 🚥🚥🚥

in #technology7 years ago

A couple of years ago, when I was in my last year of my study (Communication & Multimedia Design) at the Academy for Media & User Interaction at the Avans Highschool in Breda, two teachers asked me if I could help them program a bunch of LED-strips with an Arduino. I am actually quite handy in programming them, so me and another student, Peter Schmidt, helped them.

The installation consists of 8 x 10 LED-strips of 256 LEDs each, chained together with LDP8806 chips. We used the Adafruit library and programmed various animations - the 'show' lasted around 7 minutes...

Very cool, how long did that take to set up? I bet it must have been painful having to take it apart after putting so much effort into something.

coding the animations was done in about a week, but soldering the bunch was most exhaustive actually 😓
I think we delivered in two weeks.
Setup doesn't take a lot of time: draping the led strips is most of the work, as the Arduino (Teensy actually) already contains the program in. Just turn it on and it begins :)

When did you guys have to take everything apart and did you guys ever use it for anything else or was it just for that one setup?

No it has been set up more than once, it also has been to Sao Paolo in 2015:
