Amazon Introduces the Amazon Key

So you find yourself in a situation where the item you bought from Amazon is being delivered to you but you're not home, sucks doesn't it? But now there's no need to worry because Amazon have the solution ... actually its more like: Amazon have a solution that clearly they came up with when they were drunk!

Introducing the Amazon Key! This new invention by Amazon allows strangers to unlock your front door, leave the item you bought from Amazon in your house and take everything else out of your house ... Okay, that last part is not part of the features list of the Amazon Key but if such a thing existed in my country, South Africa, it would surely happen.

How it works

Once you've purchased and installed the smart lock on your door, you'll have the option for in home delivery. On the day of delivery the Amazon courier will knock on your door to make sure you're not home, because it would just be awkward for a complete stranger to open your front door if you're at home. Anyway, if you're not at home the Amazon courier will use an app on their phone to unlock your door and simultaneously switch the cloud cam, that comes with the lock, on. At the same time you will be notified that your package has arrived and you'll be able to watch a clip of the package being delivered. Once the package is delivered, and your transaction with Amazon is complete, you'll just have to hope and pray that the Amazon courier doesn't forget to lock your door again.

Sounds like you got nothing to worry about the next time you're not home on delivery day right? If the courier does something wrong you'll obviously have evidence because of the cloud cam. Yes that's correct, but what does the cloud cam do when there's no delivery? The cloud cam will start recording every time it detects movement, so basically it records every time you walk in and out of your house, since it faces your front door, and since it's a cloud cam, all recordings are stored on a cloud, not in the sky but rather on Amazon's servers.

My advice on the Amazon Key

Do not waste money on this product, it could cause you a lot more problems than solutions. This product is clearly just Amazon jumping at the opportunity to get into the smart lock business and to help them sell their cloud cam.

My advice on cloud cams

Don't buy a Amazon's cloud cam, buy a cloud cam that allows you to upload to a server or cloud of your choice, and always choose a decentralized cloud storage, like Storj.
