Today we will go over the preparation of Cupric Acetate from household materials, this is used for many different purposes but the one we will be looking at is electroplating conductive items with copper. Cupric acetate can be prepared in the kitchen by combining a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and 3% hydrogen peroxide. Both of which can be purchased at a convenience store. Look for hydrogen peroxide in the medical section of your chosen store and vinegar in the food section. This reaction should be done in either a glass or plastic vessel. Do not completely fill the vessel as the reaction will foam and could possibly spill over the side. In order to start the reaction copper must be introduced into the solution, this can be copper wire with the insulation stripped off or pennies minted before 1982 which were mostly copper. Any penny minted after that time will not serve our purposes as they are mainly zinc with a copper plating. In a few minutes the mixture will start to take on a blue color, that is the sign that cupric acetate has formed. Keep this solution in a glass or plastic bottle and don't let it come in contact with metals. This is what we will be building our plating rig with next week.
