Google’s AI Masters All of Chess In Just 4 Hours

The advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) is something I talk about a lot because I truly believe that our world and our civilization will never be the same once its full potential is unleashed.

In fact, we have already begun noticing their effects on our lives and we are simply oblivious to it. Take your virtual assistants on your phones for example. They are being enhanced with more and more AI capabilities every year and we enjoy the fruits without thinking about the technology behind them.

Another use case which has been getting really popular is their use in autonomous cars. Tesla’s electric cars for example, comes equipped with a feature called Autopilot which uses AI to get better at autonomous driving.

In a more distant future, AI could be running our cities and even our countries due to their learning and strategizing abilities that will be far superior to us. In fact, we have already begun seeing that trend begin.

AI Masters Chess In 4 Hours

Some months ago I had written about how Google’s DeepMind had created an artificial intelligent program called AlphaGo which bested the world champions at a game that was not entirely based on strategy and also used intuition.

Well, the latest news from the same company is that another one of its program called AlphaZero has now mastered chess and that too in just 4 hours. Since chess is a purely strategy based game, this had to be coming sooner or later.

AlphaZero was programmed with just the rules of the game and no strategies were fed to its program. It learned everything on its own, by using self-playing reliance which is called reinforcement learning in the field of AI. Tesla’s autopilot uses similar technique as well.

After mastering the entirety of humanity’s chess knowledge, AlphaZero bested the highest rated chess program called Stockfish. It beat the program 28 out of 100 times. The rest of the games ended in draws.

Anyways, this goes to show the capability that AI has already started to gain. Think about how powerful it would be and the kind of work it would be able to do in the coming decades. Even sentience doesn’t seem too far-fetched of a goal right now.

A World Governed By AI?

2.jpg

Now, I’m not talking about a scenario where AI becomes self aware and decides that humanity is the scourge of the planet and wants to get rid of us once and for all.

I am talking about a more saner version of reality, albeit strange and unlike anything we can imagine today. What I’m saying has probably been already written about in fiction novels.

How would a world governed by AI look like? When AI gets to a point where it surpasses our ability to strategize and make the most effective and efficient decisions, I think it would make sense to a future generation to replace humans from the governing jobs with AI.

Think about it, instead of governments, there would be one AI. There could still be different countries, each with its own AI. If they are programmed in such a way that in addition to having their own country’s welfare as the main goal, world peace would also be a priority.

Devoid of all human bias, greed and other negative attributes of ours, the world could finally know peace and since we would have a super intelligent decision maker, our countries could prosper thanks to the near perfect execution of every little thing. Algorithm like AlphaZero could really be used for such a purpose in a more distant future. Whether or not we should do it, is another matter.

Hey Saurav,

AI is getting accepted world wide. Smart homes and smart phones are connecting devices making our life easier.

AI is really helpful and can help disable people. It can make their life easier. What do you think @sauravrungta

That is all true!

wow, nice game and good info. i like this game

It is a sport not a game.

Great job.You did really good.AI,i believe can do the world a whole lot of good even besides AlphaZero,a lot of productive stuffs can be gained through AI.
Nice post sir.

Yes, it is a world changing technology. 100%

Its such a suprise where AI has reached so far in 2017, and mastering the chess that has more than a billion possible variations is such a great achievement for the AI industry, nice post i will follow you for more posts related to such subjects,

Yeah, I am pretty surprised by the advancements too. I had never thought it would be this fast!

AI makes me think...how easy it is to create a human. If we could build something which is intelligent then, it's damn easier for god to create human

I think the only difference would be consciousness.

Having mastered strategy in chess...dont u think they are already a conciouss being

No, I think consciousness is a much bigger game than just having the ability to strategize. It's being aware of your own identity and place in the world.

i cannot agree with you more @sauravrungta AI is no more futuristic but with us. In jaan today, a certain hotel uses only AI except for clients who come to lodge, some cities are creating AI counties and the bad side is folks are loosing their jobs to AI
Even in the world of crypto trading, AI or bots are programmed to trade which i have experienced as they will not allow one to trade as they gonna always displace you!
thanks for sharing this worthy of my upvote

Yeah, they are pretty much impossible to avoid at this point.

Sure. Humans creating what will take over. I hope one day we don't start seeing AI with human DNA or cloned /frozen brain. Would be apocalypse 😱
That's by the way! Have you heard of next big thing? Elyte. On their presale

Excellent new comer. Updated more on my posts
Best regards and keep it coming.

And we are back to AI!!! @sauravrungta AI might be more organized but it is way to dangerous, our minds are exercising less now. Ultimately we will be as good as machines, the Virtual assistant has made us just even more blank. If we won't use our brain then how will it grow.

Have you ever wondered that there was a time when we actually use to remember atleast 20 phone numbers from our directory, basically family members' number but now even one is hard to recall. Our brain will be redundant with no activity. Like more and more lifestyles disease AI comes with a deteriorating brain activity.

I am not saying whether the pervasive presence of AI in our lives is good or bad. I am just stating what is happening and what is bound to happen :)

yep you are right about what might happen but as you state that AI is devoid of human bias and might prove to be better for us; in that scenario we need to realise that our rational intellect will become so redundant that we might loose ability to judge.

In such a case, where AI is governing the world instead of humans, I think there are two scenarios that will emerge. One, the programmers of the AI will be elected individuals who will be able to use their rational intellect and second, we humans will just continue to do what we do today, only in a better system than the current governments of the world.
