Research promises new way to double the battery life on mobile

A major problem in today's mobile devices is the battery life that end up not being compatible with everyday use. Thinking about it, scientists have found a way SolidEnergy able to double the energy capacity of traditional lithium batteries in cell phones, smartwatches and even drones, which usually offer around only 1 hour charge.

Researchers have replaced the use of graphite, a traditional material by a thin metal sheet. In addition to taking up less space in mobile devices, the piece has a high energy holding capacity, thereby increasing battery life.

On an iPhone 6, for example, the project would take up almost half the space on Apple's smartphone, but would make the users to use the phone for longer without a portable charger or an outlet.

The researchers responsible for the project, the new batteries are expected to be used in drones from November this year. The first tests will help especially those who are working with actions to bring Wi-Fi to places with few network points.

"Many users are using drones and balloons to provide Internet to the developing world and help in disaster. It is a very exciting and noble application," says Qichao Hu, one of the scientists involved.

In 2017, scientists also plan to use the technology with metal sheet in smartphones, smartwatches and wearables in general.
