New Rage 2 Gameplay Details Revealed
During the QuakeCon 2018 keynote, id Software and Avalanche Studios showed off new Rage 2 gameplay.
The bulk of the footage involves protagonist Walker breaking into the Eden Space Center and calling down a satellite from space while following the instructions of the original game's Dr. Kvasir. It's an extension of what was shown off during E3, but with new information and footage sprinkled in.
The wingstick, a boomerang-like projectile weapon, returns to Rage 2. An upgraded version of the wingstick can even target and kill enemies around corners by showing a trajectory line prior to throwing the weapon.
As players take down opponents, their Overdrive meter will fill up. When it's full, players can unleash Overdrive, which pushes all weapons past their normal limits and unlocks special abilities for each one.
The gameplay features the "hyper-violent and completely lawless" Goon Squad, which was previously revealed. The Immortal Shrouded, a group of elite bandits with access to advanced technoloy that gives them cloaking abilities, was also shown off. Each faction has different settlements, combat styles and vehicles at their disposal.
The footage also demonstrated convoy takedowns. This involves getting in Walker's vehicle, the Pheonix, and taking apart convoys of various factions. Each convoy is led by a particularly large and powerful vehicle that will prove difficult to overcome. Every convoy is different, depending on which faction it belongs to - the Goon Squad has more ragtag convoys, the Immortal Shrouded's convoys are more technologically advanced, and so on.
The vehicles in any given convoy will throw down various traps as you attempt to trail them, including electric chain traps that were demonstrated in the footage. If a convoy is defeated, a newer, more powerful one will reportedly take its place on its specific route. In addition to convoy takedowns, Rage 2 will also feature racetracks where players can test their speed.
Rage 2 is reportedly a smooth and seamless experience, and completely free of loading screens during gameplay, according to developers id and Avalanche Studios.
