Before there was sound in film there was Bessie Love. She (above photo) was a star in the 20s and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in the 1929 film ‘The Broadway Melody.

The side-eye seen ’round the world. This 1957 photo of Sophia Loren and Jayne Mansfield caused controversy. Loren (black dress) was a newcomer who just skyrocketed to stardom in Europe when she became the most photographed artist at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival. Two years later there was a Beverly Hills party which was meant to officially welcome Loren to Hollywood…but the Italian bombshell had her spotlight unexpectedly stolen by Mansfield. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Loren confirmed she was thinking exactly what it looks like she was thinking.
