4 Things To Know About Breast Cancer Awareness
Pink is one of our favorite colors, whether we’re taste testing pink Lip Whips or enjoying a pink frosted cake! Pink is also the color of Breast Cancer Awareness. Every October, we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month to honor the women who have battled against breast cancer.
While we like to keep things sweet, we get serious when it comes to Breast Cancer Awareness! According to breastcancer.org, around 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Breast Cancer Awareness is an issue that hits close to home for all of us at Beauty Bakerie since our head chef, founder and CEO Cashmere Nicole, is one of the many brave and strong breast cancer survivors.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re sharing four facts you should know:
- Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a Global Event
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated worldwide. During October, charities and organizations across the globe host events to promote awareness and raise money for research. Thanks to so many people around the world, $6 billion is raised each year for breast cancer research.
- Breast Cancer Awareness Month Has Been Going Strong for 30+ Years
Breast Cancer Awareness Month started in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and a pharmaceutical division. Although it wasn’t until later that the pink ribbon became its symbol. And the woman who pushed the pink? Evelyn Lauder of beauty giant Estée Lauder, who founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Makeup and Breast Cancer Awareness go hand in hand, since 1993.
- The Biggest Event is the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk
Susan G. Komen for the Cure is one of the biggest proponents of the BCA Month. Every year, they host the Susan G. Komen 3-Day, which is a 60-mile, three-day walk to raise money for breast cancer research and education. (Over the past 14 years, they’ve hosted 156 events!) The Beauty Bakerie team is once again joining the ranks to show our support for Breast Cancer Awareness at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5k in San Diego!
