There's a plausible explanation as to why Tiger Woods is 100/1 to win the 2018 Masters
The major season is over in golf for 2017, but that just means our eyes are already on the 2018 Masters, at least from a gambling perspective.
According to the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook, Jordan Spieth is favored at 7/1 to win at Augusta. And will you look at who’s 100/1 (via ESPN) …
That’s right, you can bet that Tiger Woods will win the 2018 Masters … and he’s got better odds than names like Jason Dufner and Danny Willett.
So why would Woods’ name be on that list given the year he just had — he last played in January, eventually had surgery in April and was arrested for DUI in May — and have pretty great value at that?
The answer is simple: Because oddsmakers know you’re going to put money on it.
Remember: Odds are set and move in order to bring in the most money. It’s probable that those in charge don’t necessarily think Woods will be in good enough shape to win the 2018 Masters, let alone play in the tournament. They might think that enough people will see the value in gambling on Woods at 100/1 — whether it’s actually just to put some money behind the rooting interest or that you believe he’s healthy enough to make another run at Jack Nicklaus’s 18 majors — and bet on him.
Or, hey, maybe those in the know have some info we just don’t know about. And wouldn’t that be thrilling for all of us golf fans hoping to see one more Tiger run?
