BAM THEORY Measuring Time-Space January 9th 2018

in #time7 years ago (edited)

Hello Steemians!
This is my third poem that I've recorded myself rapping to over a beat. I always use free beats from YouTube so there's no copyright problems. This piece of art is about an odd tradition that I started with a friend named John Brown. Out of no where I had this idea to measure time by saying, "BAM JOHN BROWN - It's already been x amount of time since I've seen you." The first thing we did was measure the time between Wednesday and Friday because we we're complaining about how slow the week was going.

On that Friday when I said, "BAM JOHN BROWN - It's Friday!" It suddenly felt like time had completely disappeared. It was like we traveled into the future. It was as if Thursday never happened. John Brown said he felt a similar effect. So we started saying BAM all the time to make time go by.

First it was about surviving the week to make it to the weekend. Then we graduated high school and barely ever saw each other in college. When we did run into each other though, the first thing we ALWAYS said was, "BAM!" Because it's like a marker that tracks moments in time. I feel like it immediately reminds me of every time we've ever said BAM and I experience the emotions I felt at those times too.

This part sort of has nothing to do with John Brown.

I was depressed in high school, but I always had hope. I knew I'd get over my depression and eventually I did. When I started saying BAM to John Brown it unintentionally helped me track my feelings too. I remember exactly how I felt through all the stages of being a miserable youth in a nostalgic way. Saying BAM when I see John Brown brings up other memories that have nothing to do with him. It's helped me remember my roots and how I was raised. It's helped me remember what keeps me strong in times of stress. Saying BAM to John Brown had tons of positive effects I had no idea would happen.

All I can say is, you should try this with a friend or cousin. Someone you see every now and then who would be down to track time. It will be creepy, but rewarding.

There was this one kid in my high school named John Brown
He was a cool kid but not many people had him figured out
I met him at lunch at a table we all sat around
One day for no reason I had the urge to make a sound

I said BAM and said he said “What?”
I told him that it’s Wednesday
I said BAM and he said “What?”
That was on the Friday

Time is a highway
He remembered the BAM that was my way of measuring time space
Suddenly we started BAMMING every place that we migrate
If it was a Monday - If it was a Friday
BAMMING a fun way of measuring life’s pace

He would say BAM it’s already the spring
And I would say BAM it’s summer were free
And we laughed about the BAMs like a couple of geeks
Watching school fly by was more than a treat
That was more important to me
I was young and ignorant but now I can see
BAMMING every time I saw John B was fucking with me

There was this one time in my 3rd year of college
I hadn’t seen John Brown in over 20,000 hours
Sometimes I would wonder if remembered saying bam
But then again we were never really that good of friends
John Brown was a cool dude
If I saw him again and said BAM would he say BAM too?
And then we’d talk about our plans and if they became true
It’s been a weird jam since the last time I said BAM to you

Can you remember the last time we said BAM? I do
It was at the graduation of our high school held at SMU
I’m pretty sure we we're conversating about the things we’d do
And I said I can’t believe we’re already saying BAM cause we’re done with school

And now I can't believe I'm already saying Bam cause we're 3 years deep into college
Just a couple more dollars out of our pockets
Doesn't really matter
Cause we're BAMMING every-time that we holla

I said "BAM" three years ago to you
Now I'm saying BAM cause it's 3 more years that we have blew

Now I'm saying BAM cause you understand when I'm recording this
It's already like 3 years after that too

BAM JOHN BROWN
Look at how much time has gone by now
