Tokyo passes tough anti-smoking law
Tokyo, Japan's capital and host of 2020 summer olympics, passed a tough anti-smoking law on wednesday that will effectively ban smoking in most of the city's bar and restaurants in the run-up to the games.
japan lags many countries in the effort to fight the smoking in attempts to tackle tobacco often stymied by pro smoking politicians and restaurant owners, which one third owned by government . Tokyo is set to be a smokiest olympic games in year if no action was taken ,anti-smoking activist said.
The new law takes full affect several months before the olympics open on july 24, 2020, bans smoking in any bar and restaurants with hired employees.the Tokyo law is far tougher than legislation under debate in the upper house of japan's parliament to tackle a threat of second hand smoke, which kill about 15000 japanese , many of them are women and children.
less then a one-fifth of japanese smoke today , down from half of the population 50 years ago.last week a member of parliament jeered a lung cancer patient who was testifying about the dangers of second hand smoke.
