Hello readers,
Everyday around us we see people who we say are fat and some we can say are obese, but most of the people we call obese might actually not be obese whereas those who we call fat are in fact obese.

What does obesity mean? and when do we say a person is obese? you might ask

Obesity is defined as a condition where a person has an excess of adipose (fat) tissue mass or put simply and increase in body weight in relation to height.
From this definition we see that obesity lies far beyound mere looks of a person but goes deeper to even talk about the height.
To understand this concept we need to bring in another concept called Body Mass Index (BMI) which is a formula which helps us to calculate the ratio of a person weight to his or her height.
BMI = mass (kg) ÷ height squared (m2)
The normal BMI is 18.5 - 24.9
A person is overweight with a BMI of 25.0 - 29.9
Obesity begins with a BMI of 30.0 and above
So you see a person might weigh 70kg and have a height of 1.3meters this persons BMI is 41.4kg/m2 which means Obesity
But another person with the same weight and a height of 1.7meters will have a BMI of 24.2 which is normal. But he needs to watch out his weight and eating habits unless he might become overweight.

So next time you see a man or woman who you call fat oroverweight, before jumping into conclusions you should check out his or her BMI first.
