Politics in Nigeria as well as in the world is a dirty game. In Nigeria, there are some politicians that are influential. Most of these influential politicians in Nigeria are either involved in the decision making process in Nigeria or have influence over a particular tribe or ethnic group.

This list of popular Nigerian politicians includes members of the government who are either active or inactive, some of who might even now be dead.   1. Aloysius Iyorgyer Katsina-Alu (born 28 August 1941) was a former chief justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He is from Ushongo in what is now Benue State. Katsina-Alu has been a member of the court since 1998.
  1. Alhaji Abdu Dawakin Tofa was a Nigerian agriculturalist and academic who was briefly governor of Kano State between May and October 1983 during the Nigerian Second Republic.

  7. Major General Abdullahi Sarki Mukhtar was born on July 5, 1949 in Kano State. He was formerly the National security adviser to the president of Nigeria. Rtd Major General Mukhtar was also a former military governor of Kaduna state and Katsina State, in the case of the latter he was the first administrator or governor.

  8. General Abdulsalami Alhaji Abubakar is a Nigerian general who was President of Nigeria from 9 June 1998 until 29 May 1999. He succeeded Sani Abacha upon Abacha’s death. It was during Abubakar’s leadership that Nigeria adopted its new constitution on 5 May 1999, which provided for multiparty elections. Abubakar transferred power to president-elect Olusegun Obasanjo on 29 May 1999.

  9. Abubakar Atiku Bagudu (born 26 December 1961) is a Nigerian politician who was elected Senator for the Kebbi Central constituency of Kebbi State, Nigeria in a by-election after Senator Adamu Aliero was appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in December 2008. He ran successfully for reelection in the April 2011 national elections in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He became the political party All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in Nigeria’s 2015 general elections.

  10. Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi was a Nigerian politician, who was the governor of Kano State during the Nigerian Second Republic. He died following an attack by armed robbers.

  11. Abubakar Saleh Michika (born 1941) was the first civilian governor of Adamawa State, Nigeria from 2 January 1992 to 17 November 1993. He was a member of the then ruling National Republican Convention (NRC). He worked with the British Bank of West Africa in 1966, then John Holt company before joining the politics. He was born in Michika, headquarters of the Michika Local Government Area (LGA), in what is now the northeastern state of Adamawa.

  12. Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, KBE was a Nigerian politician, and the only prime minister of an independent Nigeria.

  13. Achike Udenwa born 1948 was the governor of Imo State in Nigeria. He became governor after winning the election in 1999. Udenwa won re-election in 2003, and his term ended on 29 May 2007. He is a member of the People’s Democratic Party. Udenwa is also an Igbo chief. He was succeeded by Chief Ikedi Ohakim on May 29, 2007.

Bayero was seen as one of Nigeria’s most prominent and revered Muslim leaders who was a successful businessman and had worked as a banker, police officer, MP and diplomat. He was a former ambassador to Senegal.

  21. Afolabi Olabimtan (June 11, 1932 – August 27, 2003) was a Nigerian politician, writer, and academic. He was born in Ogun State and was later the senator for Ogun West from 1999 to 2003. He died in a motor accident in August 2003.

  22. Alhaji Ahmed Rufai Sani Yerima was Governor of Zamfara State, Nigeria from May 1999 to May 2007, and is now Senator for Zamfara West and Deputy Minority Leader in the Senate. He is a member of the All Nigeria People’s Party.

  23. Sir Ahmadu Bello KBE was a Nigerian politician, and was the first premier of the Northern Nigeria region from 1954-1966. He was the Sardauna of Sokoto and one of the prominent leaders in Northern Nigeria alongside Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, both of whom were prominent in negotiations about the region’s place in an independent Nigeria. As leader of the Northern People’s Congress, he dominated Nigerian politics throughout the early Nigerian Federation and the First.

  30. Ali Modu Sheriff is a Nigerian politician. He is Borno State’s first governor to serve two consecutive terms (2003–2011). Though Sheriff had held two elected offices as a member of All Nigeria People’s Party, he would later join the All Progressives Congress becoming a founding member of that party.

  31. Ali Sa’ad Birnin-Kudu is a Muslim barrister and former governor of Jigawa State, northern Nigeria. He was a member of the now-defunct Social Democratic Party and served as governor from January 1992 until November 1993.

  32. Aliyu Modibbo Umar is a Nigerian technocrat who was the federal Minister of State for Power and Steel from December 2002 to May 2003, Minister of Commerce from July 2006 to July 2007, then Minister for the FCT (Federal Capital Territory, Abuja), a post he held until October 2008.

  33. Alkali Abdulkadir Jajere (born 15 October 1964) is a Nigerian journalist turned politician who was elected to the Senate for the Yobe South constituency of Yobe State, Nigeria in the April 2011 national elections. He was elected on the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) platform.

  34. Rear Admiral Allison Amaechina Madueke (born 1944) is a retired Nigerian naval officer. He was Chief of Naval Staff from 1993 to 1994, military governor of Anambra State from January 1984 to August 1985, and Imo State military governor from 1985 to 1986.

  35. Commodore Amadi Guy Ikwechegh (25 February 1951 – 10 November 2009) was a Nigerian naval officer who was appointed military governor of Imo State from 1986 to 1989 during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

  36. Ambrose Folorunsho Alli (22 September 1929 – 22 September 1989) was a Nigerian medical professor who served as Executive Governor of the defunct Nigerian state of Bendel State (now the Nigerian states of Edo and Delta ) between 1979 and 1983. He was the first civilian governor.

  37. Aminu Sule Garo (born 1962) is a Nigerian politician and businessman. He was elected Senator for Kano North in April 2007, but his election was annulled in December 2007 on the basis that he lacked the required qualifications.

  38. Anthony Eromosele Enahoro was Nigeria’s foremost anti-colonial and pro-democracy activists. He was born the eldest of twelve children in Uromi in the present Edo State of Nigeria. His Esan parents were Anastasius Okotako Enahoro and Fidelia Inibokun née Ogbidi Okojie. Enahoro has had a long and distinguished career in the press, politics, the civil service and the pro-democracy movement.

  39. Anyim Pius Anyim (born 19 February 1961) is a Nigerian politician who served as the President of Nigerian senate and was the immediate-past Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). He was elected as national Senator on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform in 1999 for the Ebonyi South constituency of Ebonyi State. He was appointed Senate President in August 2000.

  41. Arthur Okowa Ifeanyi (born 8 July 1959) is a Nigerian politician who is the incumbent Governor of Delta State. He was inaugurated as Governor on 29 May 2015 after winning the state elections conducted in April 2015. Before his Governorship, he was elected Senator for Delta North, in Delta State, Nigeria, in the April 2011 national elections. He ran on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He is an Ika from Owa-Alero in Delta State, Nigeria. He is also the first person from Anioma to clinch the governorship position of Delta State.

  42. Atiku Abubakar is a Nigerian politician, businessman and philanthropist, who served as the 2nd elected Vice-President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007, on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, with President Olusegun Obasanjo. Abubakar worked in the Nigeria Customs Service for twenty years, rising to become the Deputy Director, as the second highest position in the Service was then known.

  43. Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa was governor of Sokoto State in Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007.

  44. Peter Ayodele Fayose is the current governor of Ekiti State in Nigeria . He was governor from 29 May 2003 to 16 October 2006.

  45. Baba Gana Kingibe (born 1945) is a Nigerian politician and political appointee havening held many high-level Nigerian governmental posts. He hails from Borno State in the northeastern part of Nigeria, and is of Kanuri extraction.

  46. Babafemi Ogundipe (6 September 1924 – 20 November 1971) was the de facto Vice President of Nigeria during Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi’s 1966 military government. He was born on September 6, 1924 to Yoruba parents from Ago-Iwoye, in present-day Ogun State in western Nigeria.

  47. Babafemi Ojudu (born 27 March 1961) is a Nigerian journalist who was elected Senator for the Ekiti Central constituency of Ekiti State, Nigeria, in the April 2011 national elections. He ran on the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) platform.

  48. Abraham Babalola Borishade (7 March 1946-April 26, 2017) was a Nigerian politician. Born into the Ebi Ilotin family he was a Federal Minister in Nigeria four times, between 1999-2011. He was known as an electrical engineer, teacher and political strategist. He died on the 26 April 2017 after a brief illness. He was 71.

  49. Chief Babatunji Olowofoyeku, OFR, SAN (21 May 1917 – 26 March 2003) was a Nigerian politician, educationist, lawyer and leader, a Yoruba and native of Ilesha in Osun State of Nigeria, whose political career started in the mid-1950s. He had a distinguished education and career, hence his full accolades as follows: Chief Babatunji Olowofoyeku, BA (Hons), LLB (Hons) London, OFR, SAN.

  50. Badamasi Maccido (1961 – 29 October 2006) was elected federal Senator for the Sokoto North constituency of Sokoto State, Nigeria in April 2003 on the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) platform. He died in a plane crash in October 2006.

  51. Bamanga Tukur (CON) (born 15 September 1935) is a prominent Nigerian businessman and politician who served as Minister for Industries in the administration of General Sani Abacha during the 1990s. He is one of the high profile civil servants and military officers who acquired large areas of farmland along the various River Basin authorities. He is currently as of 2012 the president of the Africa Business Roundtable. From March 2012 to January 2014, Tukur was National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

  52. Bassey Edet Otu (born 18 October 1959) is a Nigerian politician who represented the Calabar Municipal/Odukpani constituency of Cross River State, Nigeria in the Federal House of Assembly from 2003 – 2011. He was elected Senator for Cross River South in the April 2011 elections, running on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform.

  53. Christopher Adebayo Ojo, SAN is a former Attorney General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. As such, he is also a past head of the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Justice. He is a legal practitioner and is licensed to practise in Nigeria, England and Wales. He is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

  54. Bello Hayatu Gwarzo is a Nigerian politician who has been a member of the national senate since 1999.

  55. Bello Jibrin Gada is a Nigerian politician who was Senator for Sokoto East from May 1999 to May 2003. He was appointed Minister of Culture & Tourism on 17 December 2008 after a cabinet reshuffle by President Umaru Yar’Adua. He left office in March 2010 when Acting President Goodluck Jonathan dissolved his cabinet.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, also known as Asiwaju and Jagaban, (born 29 March 1952) was elected Senator for the Lagos West constituency in Lagos State, Nigeria in 1993, just before a military take-over in December 1993. After the return to democracy, he was elected governor of Lagos State, holding office from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007.

He is an influential member of the All Progressives Congress party; he also holds both the chieftaincies of the Asiwaju of Lagos and the Jagaban of the Borgu Kingdom in Niger State, Nigeria. He is often tagged the National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) party with President Muhammadu Buhari.

  1. Boluwaji Kunlere (born April 1960) is a Nigerian politician who was elected Senator for Ondo South, in Ondo State, Nigeria in the April 2011 national elections. He was elected to the Labour Party platform.

  2. Boni Haruna (born 12 June 1957) is the current Nigerian Minister for Youth Development. He was governor of Adamawa State in Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. He was a member of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

  3. Abubakar Bukola Saraki (born December 19, 1962) is a Nigerian politician who has been President of the Nigeria’s Senate since 2015. Previously he was Governor of Kwara State from 2003 to 2011. He was first elected to the Senate in April 2011, representing the Kwara Central senatorial district, and re-elected in the March 2015 elections.

  4. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (4 November 1933 – 26 November 2011) was a Nigerian military officer and politician who served as the military governor of the Eastern Region of Nigeria in 1966 and the leader of the breakaway Republic of Biafra from 1967 to 1970. He was active as a politician from 1983 to 2011, when he died aged 78.

  5. Sir Celestine Ngozichim Omehia (born 15 September 1959) was the fourth Governor of Rivers State from 29 May 2007 to 25 October 2007. He is a member of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He is married to Mrs. Anthonia Omehia (née Itakpe) and they have three children (Keturah, Kelechi and Kechikamma).

  6. Chimaroke Nnamani (born May 1960) is a medical doctor and Nigerian politician from Enugu State. He was Governor of Enugu State from 1999 to 2007 and a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Senator for Enugu East Senatorial District from 2007 to 2011.

  7. Chinwoke Mbadinuju (born 14 June 1945) was Governor of Anambra State in Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2003, elected on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform. His period in office was noted for internal PDP disputes resulting in a failure of effective government. After leaving office, he was embroiled in court cases over alleged involvement in a political murder.

  8. Christiana “Chris” Anyanwu MFR (born 28 October 1951) is a Nigerian journalist, publisher, author, and politician. She was imprisoned from 1995 to 1998 for treason after reporting on a failed coup d’état against the government of Sani Abacha, and won several international journalism prizes during her confinement, including the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.

  9. Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige (born 8 August 1952) was governor of Anambra State in Nigeria from 29 May 2003 to 17 March 2006 under the People Democratic Party (PDP). He is currently a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was elected Senator for Anambra Central Constituency in April 2011.

  11. Christopher Omoworare Babajide (born 31 October 1968) is a Nigerian politician who was elected Senator for the Osun East constituency of Osun State, Nigeria in the April 2011 and March 28, 2015 elections. He ran on the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) platform.

  12. Dr. Chuba Wilberforce Okadigbo (December 17, 1941 – September 25, 2003), was President of the Senate of Nigeria. He was sometimes referred to as Oyi of Oyi in reference to his local government council area (Oyi); he also held numerous political positions in the Nigeria government. He was known to be opposed to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party of Nigeria, which was led by President Olusẹgun Ọbasanjọ from the year 1999 – 2007.

  13. Patrick Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu, (1937–1967) was a Nigerian military officer who played a leading role in the January 15, 1966 military coup, an event that derailed Nigeria’s nascent democracy and introduced military rule to Nigeria. Nzeogwu was born in the Northern Region’s capital of Kaduna to Igbo immigrant parents from the Mid-Western Region-Okpanam Town, near Asaba in the present day Anioma Delta State.

Clement David Ebri (born 1952) is a Nigerian politician who was elected on the NRC platform as Governor of Cross River State, Nigeria between January 1992 and November 17, 1993 during the Nigerian Third Republic, leaving office after the military coup that brought General Sani Abacha to power. He was a strong supporter of General Ibrahim Babangida, who had initiated the short-lived third republic.

  1. Colonel (retired) Abubakar Dangiwa Umar (born 1949) was governor of Kaduna state in Nigeria from August 1985 to June 1988 during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. After retiring from the army in 1993, he became a social critic and the founder of Movement for Unity and Progress, a political party.

  2. Brigadier General Dan Patrick Archibong (4 October 1943 – 11 March 1990) was a Nigerian soldier who was Military Governor of Cross River State from January 1984 until 1986.

  3. Dr. Danladi Abdullahi Sankara is a Nigerian politician who is Senator for the Jigawa North-West constituency of Jigawa State, Nigeria. Danladi is a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

  4. Major-General David Akpode Ejoor rcds psc (born 10 January 1932) is a retired Nigerian Army officer who served as Chief of Army Staff(COAS). He is the first Nigerian Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy and was once governor of the now-defunct Mid-Western Region. David Ejoor was the governor of the Mid-Western State of Nigeria, during the Biafra Civil War. He then served as Chief of Army Staff from January 1971 to July 1975.

  5. David Alechenu Bonaventure Mark, GCON (born April 1948) is a retired Nigerian Army Brigadier General and politician. He was President of the Senate of Nigeria from 2007 to 2015 and is the Senator for the Benue State constituency. He is a member of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP). Prior to his senatorial career, Mark was the military governor of Niger State from 1984 to 1986 and the Minister of Communication.

Babangida resigned under pressure to cede control to a democratic government.
