Bode's Law and The Missing Planet [ENG/TR]

in #tr7 years ago (edited)

This text is about Bode's Law which is an equation for the positions of the planets. Please, scroll down for Turkish version.

[ENGLISH]

Have you ever wonder the positions of the planets in the solar system? Is there any relation between them?

Johann Elert Bode, a german scientist, stated a formula in 1778. That was about a relationship between the average distances of planets to the sun in the solar system and it is called Bode’s Law (a.k.a. Titius-Bode Law). Acoording to that law; if you take the series 0, 3, 6, 12,... etc. and add 4 to each number and devide by 10, you will get this result;

0.4 |0.7 |1.0 |1.6 |2.8 |5.2 |10.0 |19.6 |38.8 |

These numbers are very close the mean distances of the planets from the sun.

PlanetsActual distance (A.U.)Bode's Law
Mercury0.390.4
Venus0.720.7
Earth1.001.00
Mars1.521.6
??2.8
Jupiter5.205.2
Saturn9.5410.0
Uranus19.1919.6

By the way, Uranus has discovered after decleration of the law in 1781. But it obeyed to that. As you see on the table, according to Bode’s Law there is a missing planet between Mars and Jupiter. Practically, there are thousands of asteroids that meets the “missing planet of Bode”. This is called Asteroid Belt. The biggest asteroid is Vesta which is 530 km in diameter.

You see in the picture above from NASA, how long the distance between Mars and Jupiter and where the asteroid Belt is.

0.4 |0.7 |1.0 |1.6 |2.8 |5.2 |10.0 |19.6 |38.8 |
