Etimoloji diye bir bilim var; köken bilimi. Etimolojik kelimeler sözlükleri ilgilenenleri cezbedebilir. Bu yazılarda kısa bir süre önce etimolojisini öğrendiğim bazı kelimeler üzerinden sizi bir yolculuğa çıkaracağım. Çam, sümbül, panik, bülbül ve eko işte bunlardan bazıları. Merakınızı uyandırmayı başardıysam başlayabiliriz.
Panik ile başlayalım ve bu kelimenin bir flüt türü, şırınga ve pan-Avrupalı kelimesi ile ilişkilerini kuralım. Sözlük araştırmalarıma dayanarak aşağıdaki bilgileri aktarıyorum.
Ani dehşet duygusu, büyük korku ve ürkü gibi anlamları bulunan panik kelimesi dilimize Fransızca panique kelimesinden gelmiş. Yunanca da ise panikon diyorlar. Gelelim hikayeye. Yunan mitolojisinde çobanların, avcıların, sürülerin ve de ayrıca pastoral (kır yaşantısı ve çobanların aşk ve yaşayışlarını anlatan) müziğin tanrısı Pan’dır. Hermes’in oğlu.
Tasvirlerinde belden aşağısı keçi biçiminde yukarısı ise insandır. Keçi boynuzları ve kuyruğu bulunur. Kırlarda ansızın insanların karşısına çıkıp onları korkuttuğu için bu kelime Pan’ın adından türemiştir.
Bir de pan flüt var. TDK da anlamı: Antik Çağdan beri kullanılan yan yana bağlanmış değişik uzunluktaki kamış, metal, kil veya ahşaptan yapılan, ince borulardan oluşan bir tür üflemeli çalgıdır. Efsaneye gör Pan aşık olduğu peri Syrinks’e tam sarılacakken Syrinks bir saza dönüşür. Dere kıyılarında bulunan sazlıklar aklınıza gelsin. Açık renkli içi boş kamış şeklinde uzun bitki türü.
Burada çağrışım yapmıştır diye bir parantez açmalıyım. Türk halk müziğinde bağlama ve benzer mızraplı müzik aletlerinin adı olan saz ise Farsça kökenli. Uyum, uygun demek.
Pan üzüntüsünden dolayı sazlık kamışları farklı uzunluklarda keserek 7 tanesini yanyana yapıştırır ve üflemeye başlar. Ortaya tatlı bir melodi yayılır. Syrinx İngilizcede pan flüt demek. Çoğulu ise syringes ve bunun Türkçesi ise şırınga. Bu da üfleme borusu veya su çekme borusu şeklinde kullanımını saza dönüşen periye borçlu.
Unutmadan Pan, çoban kavalını severmiş, oldukça azgınmış ve perilerin peşine düşermiş. Acaba azgın teke söyleyişi de buradan mı geldi. Evet tekeler azabilir, azgın olabilir. Ancak halk arasında, azgın teke; orta yaş krizine giren, cinsel isteğinde yalancı artış yaşayan, sosyal çevresini terk etmeye girişen kişilere deniyor.
Marathon (burada yetişen rezene bitkisinin Yunancası, antik olimpiyatlarda hiç maraton koşulmamıştır) ovasından oldukça uzakta olan Sparta’ya elçinin koşması ile yaklaşan savaşın haberi verilebilmiştir. Marathon savaşı gecesi Persler'i kişisel özellikleri ile paniğe uğrattığı için, Atinalılar savaştan sonra tanrı Pan'a Akropolis eteğinde bir tapınak yaptılar.
Ayrıca, Pan sözü Yunancada "bütün" anlamına geliyor. Pan'ı herşeyi yapabilir bir tanrı olarak gördüler. Bu anlamıyla dilimizde pan-Amerikan ve pan-Avrupa şeklinde kullanım yerleşiyor. Güzel değil mi?

There is a science called etymology; science of origin you may say. Etymological word dictionaries may appeal to who are interested. In these blog pieces I will take you on a journey through some of the words I learned about a little while ago about. Pine, hyacinth, panic, nightingale and eco are some of them. If I managed to receive your attention, we shall start.

Let's start with panic, and let’s try to find the connection to the words “defining a type of flute, syringe and the word pan-European”. I am summarizing the following information based on my dictionary research.

Sudden horror, great fear defines the word ** panic **. In Turkish it derives from the word panique in French. In Greek, they say panicon. Let's come to the story. Since Pan panicked the Persians with his personal characteristics in this war, the Athenians built a temple on the side of Acropolis for the god Pan afterwards.
