(Travel Diary) Saint Anthony de Padua Shrine - Sulangan
Do you know the story about it ?
Since I was a child, I heard a lot of stories about the church. I was curious why people keep going there even it's located in a remote area. So, I searched and visited there.
Reasons why people keep going there
People say that the church is a wishing church, if you wish, it will be granted. Some say that it's their way of thanking God for all the blessings they have received. And others treat it as a solemn vow.
The assets of the church
The St. Anthony de Padua Church in Sulangan, Eastern Samar is the most famous church in the region 8. Rumors are spreading that the church creates a high number of board passers. Many fresh graduates who go there before the exam, immediately passed the board exam. They say that they used the pencil found in the church especially the pencils found on the patron saint, Jude Thaddeus. As a golden rule, this pencil should be returned or replaced by a new pencil if someone has used it and passed the board exam.
Another asset of the church is the '' 33 journeys for a wish'' I called it 33 journeys for a wish cause you pray on the 33 saints and after you passed one before the other saint, you have to put money on it. The money you have to put on each saint should be the same cause if you don't share the money; equally, your request will not be fulfilled. After you put the money to all saints, you are ready for your wish.
Need to Know before planning to visit
It has been said that once you’ve promised to visit the place, you should fulfill it. Why? Cause according to some people, undesirable consequences would happen if you’ve ignored and disregard what you’ve promised. Some get sick and experienced unwanted accidents or other misfortunes.
How to get there
- IF YOU ARE FROM MANILA
The easiest way to go there is to ride first an airplane from Manila to Tacloban. The flight takes one hour and 20 minutes. Then from Tacloban Domestic Airport (San Jose, Tacloban City), ride a jeepney or a multi-cab to the terminal, if you want to ride a bus. Look for the duptours terminal, van-vans or grand tours, if you want to ride a van.
- IF YOU ARE FROM CEBU
There are two ways:
Via Calbayog or Catbalogan
Via Calbayog
You can ride an airplane from Cebu to Calbayog. The flight takes at least an hour. You can find buses and vans bound for Sulangan, Eastern Samar at the local terminal.
Via Catbalogan
You can also ride ferryboats from Cebu-Catbalogan.You can purchase tickets from ferry outlets in Cebu City (via Roble Shipping Lines, Inc.). It takes least seven (7) hours for large passenger ships. Then look for vans at the terminal bound for Sulangan, Eastern Samar.
Here is what I've got:
Did you know that?
Of all the church devasted by Yolanda or the so-called Typhoon Haiyan, The St. Anthony de Padua Church in Sulangan remains undamaged.
