Como todo bosque, se distingue por estar dominado por árboles, al contrario de una pradera o una sabana, donde lo que abundan son hierbas.

Like any forest, it is distinguished by being dominated by trees, as opposed to a meadow or a savanna, where what abounds are herbs.

Pero este es un bosque particular, porque se encuentra colindando con el mar.

But this is a particular forest, because it is adjacent to the sea.

Pero para un vegetal, el vivir en un sitio como este requiere adaptaciones importantes. Por ejemplo, el manglar tiene raíces que filtran la sal y le permiten tomar agua de mar, así como glándulas excretoras de sal. Además, debido a la inestabilidad del suelo donde se desarrolla, necesita diversos puntos de apoyo, por lo que genera raíces aéreas que parten del tallo y cumplen la función de muchos bastones de sostén.

But for a vegetable, living in a place like this requires major adaptations. For example, the mangrove has roots that filter salt and allow it "to drink" sea water, as well as salt excretory glands. In addition, due to the instability of the soil where it develops, it needs several support points, so it generates aerial roots that start from the stem and fulfill the function of many support sticks.

Además, sus frutos (y semillas) poseen una forma alargada con el extremo puntiagudo y pesado, lo que hace que se entierren al caer, y puedan germinar en un terreno que se inunda con el agua de mar.

In addition, its fruits (and seeds) have an elongated shape with a pointed and heavy end, which causes them to bury when they fall, and can germinate in a land that is flooded with seawater.

Como el suelo donde viven es muy pantanoso, su nivel de oxígeno es muy bajo, por lo que necesitan estrategias para oxigenar su sistema de raíces. Para ello, desarrollan raíces que emergen del suelo llamadas neumatóforos, con unos pequeños poros que permiten el ingreso de oxígeno.

As the soil where they live is very swampy, its oxygen level is very low, so they need strategies to oxygenate their root system. To do this, they develop roots that emerge from the ground called pneumatophores, with small pores that allow the entry of oxygen.

Los manglares tienen una gran importancia ecológica ya que en sus raíces sumergidas crecen una multiplicidad de especies de distintos grupos taxonómicos, como esponjas de mar, moluscos, algas marinas, y cnidarios como las anémonas. Todos ellos crean unos contrastes de colores asombrosos!!

The mangroves have a great ecological importance because in their submerged roots grow a multiplicity of species from different taxonomic groups, such as sea sponges, molluscs, seaweeds, and cnidarians (anemones for example). All of them create amazing contrasts of colors!!

Muchas especies utilizan estos espacios bajo el manglar para su alimentación o como zonas de criadero, siendo común encontrar juveniles de especies de peces pasando sus etapas tempranas de vida.

Many species use these spaces under the mangrove for their feeding or as breeding areas, being common to find juveniles of fish species passing their early stages of life.

A la sombra del mangle, se crean espacios únicos de vida.
In the shadow of the mangrove, unique spaces of life are created.

Y como si esto fuera poco, la parte terrestre del manglar soporta también una gran cantidad de especies, particularmente de aves, algunas de las cuales anidan en estos árboles.

And as if this were not enough, the terrestrial part of the mangrove also supports a large number of species, particularly birds, some of which nest in these trees.

El problema de fondo es que toda esta diversidad se sostiene a expensas de una sola especie, en este caso Rhizophora mangle. De tal manera que cualquier daño que altere al manglar, tendrá consecuencias sobre todo el conjunto de organismos asociados. Por eso hay que preservar el mangle, evitando los efectos de la contaminación y la tala de los árboles.

The underlying problem is that all this diversity is sustained at the expense of a single species, in this case Rhizophora mangle. In such a way that any damage that alters the mangrove will have consequences on the whole set of associated organisms. That is why we have to preserve the mangrove, avoiding the effects of pollution and the felling of trees.
