Nice pics, but you make things too complicated:
"born in Singapore, but I've spent almost my entire life in New Zealand"
So, you're a Kiwi born in Singapore. That's probably all people who ask want to know.

Thanks about the pictures! In response to making things more complicated, that may be true. On re-reading this I do also thing some writing is far too convoluted for publication. But I'm not writing about whether or not I am a kiwi or a Singaporean or Chinese simply to address those who ask, but to clarify to myself exactly which parts of my heritage I choose to identify with. And I do treasure the short period of time I spent in Singapore, I remember too much for it to be dismissed.

To be Kiwi, well, that depends too. I'll give that response when I am overseas, but at home, I'm not accepted as a Kiwi as much as someone of European descent because I still LOOK Chinese. I'm a first generation immigrant so the way our household runs isn't the same as what's generally accepted as Kiwi. So it does get a little more complicated, and while those who do care ask more questions, I've had some hilariously ignorant responses like, Singapore and Malaysia are on the same coast so who are you to claim that you have multi-heritage roots? And, 'how can you be Chinese if you're not from China?'

If we were having a true conversation about you know, where I'm from, I'm still not going to be able to give you a linear answer. Not until I've figured it out myself.

Thanks for reading!

Everyone has to come clean with themselves. Can't take that away from you.
Just saying, you're an individual. Whether people accept you in their group doesn't really matter for your identity.
I've never understood the need of people to belong to a group, though, so my opinion is probably not the most valuable in that regard.
