Vaccinations

Peru is one of the most beautiful and diverse countries in South America, from its ancient ruins to its astonishing jungles. However all that can’t be without its risks and its important to top up your vaccinations before you go. The CDC and WHO recommend that traveller’s receive vaccinations for yellow fever, typhoid, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and rabies, particularly if the jungle is on your itinerary. Put some money aside to buy bottled water too as the standard of the tap water can vary depending on where you are.

Learn key Spanish phrases

In South America very few people speak English with proficiency. Peru is no exception so, be prepared with an English-Spanish dictionary and a phrase book if you want to make the most of your trip. You may also need to brush up on some of the Peruvian slang – chupar is to ‘drink’, while chela is ‘beer’. Sorted.

Get some of the local currency (Nuevo Sol)

Although most hotels will take US dollars, its always a good idea to carry round some of the local currency with you. You can usually exchange it at the banks in Peru, but we recommend sorting some out in your country before heading out to avoid large fees.

Bring appropriate clothing

In Peru, the temperatures can change very quickly, particularly if visiting the Andean highlands where temperatures can drop below freezing. Therefore packing warm clothing is pretty important, while you should also expect to do a lot of trekking, meaning comfortable shoes are a must. Pack your jazziest shirt as well, just in case the pisco sours go to your head and you go for a spontaneous night out.
