Shaoguan - A Peasant's Life / Landleben
| This could have been another post about cycling in the countryside, but this is from several days & focuses on farm life, so I decided to make it a topic of its own. | Dies hätte auch ein Beitrag über's Umgebungsradeln sein können, aber die Bilder stammen von mehreren Tagen & alles dreht sich um's Landleben. Also denke ich mal, das kann auch ein Thema für sich sein. |

| I probably mentioned it before, farming around Shaoguan, just like in most of Canton, is surprisingly small scale. Many farmers don't own a lot of land & manual labour still prevails. In some cases it obviously doesn't even matter whether livestock runs around freely, because everyone knows who owns what. That's how I met the above piglet & the chickens below: | Wahrscheinlich habe ich es schonmal erwähnt: Landwirtschaft um Shaoguan, wie in den meisten Teilen Kantons, ist überraschend kleinteilig. Viele Bauern haben nicht viel Land & es wird immer noch viel von Hand erledigt. In manchen Fällen kann man offenbar das Vieh wild herumlaufen lassen, weil sowieso jeder weiß, wem was gehört. So begegnete ich dem oben zu sehenden Ferkel & den Hühnern unten: |

| That's obviously not the rule, though. Cantonese farmers also have stables & pigsties. The piglet was lucky to be happy, other pigs were not so lucky nor happy: | Das ist aber natürlich nicht die Regel. Kantonesische Bauern haben auch Ställe. Das Ferkel hatte Glück, glücklich zu sein. Andere Schweine waren über ihr Glück nicht so glücklich. |

| Well, OK, can't say that much about pig happiness. Could be just what it likes, staying in the dark pigsty all day, just eating, sleeping & relieving itself. | Nunja, soviel weiß ich nicht über schweinisches Glück. | This is one of the typical small villages in which you may find these small pigsties. The buildings made from yellowish bricks are stables or pigsties. The other buildings are houses, in front, near the pond live the poorer farmers. In the back, the houses with several floors, that's where the wealthier ones live. | Das ist eines der typischen kleinen Dörfer, in denen man solche kleinen Schweineställe finden kann. Die Gebäude aus gelben Ziegelsteinen sind Ställe. Die anderen sind Häuser, wobei die vorderen, am Teich gelegenen den ärmeren Bauern gehören. In den mehrstöckigen Häusern im Hintergrund leben die etwas wohlhabenderen. |

| As you can see, small fields & manual labour. That's the life of many poorer farmers (not only) in Canton. But, sometimes you also come across an idyll like below. Although, the guy guarding the water buffalo may not necessarily see it this way. | Wie man sieht: kleine Felder & Handarbeit. So sieht das Leben vieler ärmerer Bauern (nicht nur) in Kanton aus. Manchmal begegnet einem aber auch ein Idyll wie unten. Obwohl der Typ, der den Wasserbüffel hütet, dies nicht unbedingt genauso sieht. |

| This building is not as bad as the first look implies. There are much worse ones, although nowadays fewer than 12 years ago, when I made these pictures. The building above was particularly interesting for the combination of things hung up to dry in front of it: | Die Hütte ist aber nicht so schlimm, wie es auf den ersten Blick scheint. Es gibt noch wesentlisch schlechtere, wenn auch heutzutage nicht mehr soviele wie vor 12 Jahren, als diese Bilder entstanden. Das Gebäude oben war vor allem interessant wegen der Kombination von Dingen, die dort zum Trocknen aufgehängt worden waren. |

| Combining meat, dirty mops & clean clothes this way is not too uncommon in China, though. Even wealthier farmers do it: | Fleisch, dreckige Mops & saubere Kleidung gemeinsam aufzuhängen ist in China nicht ungewöhnlich. Auch wohlhabendere Bauern tun es: |

| Most of the ponds in Canton are used to produce fish, but you can also find quite a number used for ducks. Ducks are important for meat production. (I'm not a fan of Peking Duck, but spicy duck feet are great. I like to eat them as a snack when watching sports. 3 duck feet are enough to keep my mouth busy for almost a complete football match.) | Die meisten Teiche in Kanton werden zur Fischzucht genutzt, aber man findet auch welche für Enten. Diese sind auch wichtig als Fleischlieferanten. (Bin kein großer Fan von Pekingente, aber scharfe Entenfüße sind toll. Ich esse sie gerne als Snack, wenn ich Sport gucke. 3 Entenfüße sind genug für ein fast komplettes Fußballspiel.) |

| Life's not easy for these farmers. But it very much depends on the individual how successful they are. The pictures here are from poorer areas. Sometimes you can find whole villages of pretty new 5- or 6-storeyed buildings, & they put some special structures on top to make them even higher. (Sometimes this seems to be some kind of competition.) | Das Leben dieser Bauern ist nicht leicht. Es hängt aber auch sehr vom Individuum ab, wie erfolgreich sie sind. Die Bilder hier stammen aus eher ärmeren Gegenden. Manchmal findet man aber auch ganze Dörfer aus ziemlich neuen 5- oder 6-stöckigen Häusern, oft mit besonderen Strukturen auf dem Dach, um sie noch höher zu machen. (Scheint oft so eine Art Wettkampf zu sein.) |

| Anyway, go & look for yourself. If you visit Shaoguan or any other small Cantonese city, it only takes you 20 minutes or so by bus to find such villages. & if you're lucky, you also see a nice sunset. | Wie auch immer, man sollte sich sowas ruhig mal selber ansehen. Wenn man Shaoguan oder eine ähnlich kleine kantonesische Stadt besucht, braucht man oft nur 20 Minuten mit dem Bus, um solche Dörfer zu finden. & wenn man Glück hat, sieht man auch einen netten Sonnenuntergang. |
