Fucking Austria - Summer Travel Plans
The little village with the funny name

Travel about 21 miles North of Saltzburg and you will discover the village of Fucking. Yup, its a real place!

This little hamlet of around 100 people has been a popular tourist destination since the end of World War 2. Countless soldiers and tourist have had their photos taken in front of the village's four signs.

History

The settlement is said to have been founded sometime in the 6th Century AD by Fucko (or Focko), a Bavarian nobleman. As Latin and early German languages evolved, the current spelling was cemented in the 18th century.

Continuing Problems

Not surprisingly, sign theft is probably the most serious (and only) crime that routinely occurs in Fucking. Replacement signs cost the village around 300 Euro each. To discourage thieves, new theft-resistant signs have been installed that are welded to steel, which is then embedded in concrete.

The village decided to install cameras in 2009, as an attempt to stop tourists from filming themselves having sex in front of the Fucking signs.

Cashing-in

A website was established by a resident to sell t-shirts on-line. The shirts featured pictures of the village's sign or the slogan, "I like Fucking in Austria". After being shouted at and repeatedly threatened by his neighbors, Josef Winkler took down his website.

Name Change

Despite many rumors over the years, the village has no intention to change its ancient name. The people that live there, just want to be left alone to go about their day. So come and visit, take some pictures in front of the sign and go.
