Travel Tip: mysterious Boubin Forest, one of the oldest forests in Europe
Dear Steemit friends and followers,
Welcome to my Travel Tip edition where I promote some of the most beautiful places, interesting landmarks and impressive architectural sites of my homeland, the Czech Republic.
Today, I would like to show you one of the most beautiful pieces of the untouched Czech wilderness, the famous Boubin Forest.

Located in the southern part of the country, close to the borders with both Germany and Austria, the Boubin Forest has a status of the national protected area and natural reserve. Occupying a total area of almost 700 ha, the reserve is known to be one of the oldest forests in Europe with some of its woods dating back to as early as 12,000 years ago. You can still find living trees there (usually spruces, beeches and firs) that are up to 500 years old.

A part of the Sumava National Park, the Boubin Forest is packed with natural beauty of all kinds, attracting about 100,000 tourists every year. The forest is very popular among domestic visitors but it is estimated that up to 30% of the total number consists of international tourists.
There are numerous hiking trails in the reserve, ranging from short and easy to medium and difficult hikes that require some fitness. The forest is dominated by the Mount Boubin (1,362 m or 4,470 ft), one of the highest peaks of the whole Sumava Mountain Range.

There is a wooden lookout tower at the very top of the mountain, offering spectacular vistas of the surrounding landscape. If the visibility is good, visitors can see as far as into the Alps.
Easily accessible from the information center located in the Kaplice village, the Boubin Forest is open to public all year round and there is not even an entrance fee. In winter, however, some parts of the reserve might be closed due to bad weather conditions.
