A millennium of history on the bank of the river Danube

in #travel7 years ago

A couple of days ago Bulgaria celebrated its National Liberty Day - 3 March and the 140th Anniversary of the Liberation from Ottoman Rule.
To honor the day(with a slight delay) I’ll show you a place that was important back then - Baba Vida Castle in Vidin.

It is a medieval fortress, actually the only one completely preserved in Bulgaria.

It was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman fortress - Bononia by bulgarians around 10th century. It was an impressive fortification that also resisted several long sieges (one of them lasted 8 months)

Over the past millennium it went through several different ownership- Byzantines, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Ottoman.

The fortress played a role during the Ottoman rule of Bulgaria, serving as a weapon warehouse and a prison, also as residence for Osman Pazvantoğlu. The ottoman called it “the virgin fortress” because it was never conquered by force.

Today it is a museum and popular tourist destination.

I can not say I am very interested in history but here the history can be just felt. While walking around the fortress, I feel like I am traveling far back in time. The place has its own charismatic historical atmosphere.

Some great pictures Daniela! I love castles. That skeleton on the rack...That looks like me around lunch time after working hard at my desk all morning! :)

Oh you look nice around lunch time then 😃😃😃😃 thanks for making me laugh out loud and congrats for your new increased IQ :)!

Haha, you’re welcome. I’m actually going to try both pairs of reading glasses at the same time to see if I can double my IQ. :p

I like the post, say things with their real names, Turkish slavery, not Ottoman domination. Because the memory of history will not last, such as the Baba Vida fortress

Looks like a great place to explore.
