How well do you know your Guinness?
As part of a series on Irish Pubs, in Dublin, I am giving a rating to each pub I visit based on the Guinness. There is a scale of 1-4, 4 is exceptional, 3 is very good and 2 is acceptable, 1 is muck.
There has been only one 4 in the first 6 pubs I have visited so far.
Guinness Draught
There are two main variants of Traditional Guinness; The "Old Man Bottles" and the Draught stuff. I haven't ever tried the "Old Man Bottles" before. Not many pubs sell it but I have a pub in mind that I will get to in this series that sells Guinness Extra Stout in a bottle. The most popular Guinness today is Guinness Draught. This is what your likely to have come across if you have visited an Irish Pub. It truly is a thing of beauty.

All of these were good but only one was exceptional.
So which do you think got a 4?
The Two Part Pour
There is great ceremony around pouring the perfect pint of Guinness.
- The pint is first filled to the Harp
- It's then let to settle for 119.5 seconds before being topped up
There are as many opinions around what makes a great pint as there are pubs in Ireland but one thing for sure, some places get it right. That smooth sweet smelling aroma with the perfect balance of bitter and sweet.
The Irish Pub & a Dirty Old Town
Follow my series visiting pubs in Dublin, the Dirty Old Town. For some nostalgia as you read here is a great rendition of the hit folk song Dirty Old Town by one of my favourite Irish Bands, the Pogues.
Hidden Gems
I have been in Dublin, the Dirty Old Town, for 13 years and I still regularly come across a hidden gem. A pub, I previously didn't know existed. A Pub that has been there for years and may even have the best Guinness in the world.
This realisation has inspired me to embark on this journey around our nations capital leaving no stone unturned in my search for the best pubs, and best pint in Dublin.

I am worried I am giving a misleading picture of pubs in Dublin. They all don't have great Guinness. There is really a lot of muck in Dublin. I may have to visit one and get some photographs to give a balanced view to Steemit 😟

Clearly not well enough! I live in South-Africa and the only place I have ever been able to get it on tap is an Irish pub called 'The Brazen Head'...
I am on a journey across Dublin, so many places to visit. There are so many great places.
Have you tried Guinness Extra Stout in a bottle?, I believe there is an export version of that too.
How was the Guinness in The Brazen Head?
It was actually really nice! I love how creamy it is, but at the same time, it has that crisp bitterness to it. I have not seen anything but the can in store unfortunately...
@eroche Big fan of this post! Visited Dublin back in 2013 for St. Patricks day. Wow, was that terrrible time!!! Way, to much, beer, Irish women, and dirty jokes. Looking forward to more from you. One question, I may be missing it, but which pub got the 4?

Yeah, St. Patricks day is too busy. From May to September will be the best time. ;)
You said you were rating them on a scale of 1 to 4, how can you get a 43, 12, and a 14. Must be an Irish counting system. Or you drank all those beers and once!
Ha ha, maybe it is. My counting is not great after testing.
I am trying to avoid the pubs that will get a 1 and even the ones that will get a 2. I was the victim of one 2 in my journey so far.
I found one 4, which was out of this world.
The rest were 3's so far or as we say in Ireland trees 😏
So what makes a really bad Guinness?
Hmmm, you can easily tell by the look. It's just not an enjoyable experience at all.
Hehe, it would probably take mevyears to develop this technique.

Was the 4 the one in the Aviva Stadium? It has the look alright!
That one looked amazing. It had a beautiful colour and the first few sips tasted great but it didn't last to the end of the pint.
Maybe it was my mood, (my team lost) but that only got a 3. Still great stuff but just not exceptional.

A few years ago I went for a drink after work and we were in the Snug in Keohes. I left after one drink and went home, the next day my friend who had stayed let me know Shane had come in and spent the evening drinking with them in the Snug. I was gutted. He is certainly a character and an unbelievable songwriter on of my all time favourites.
