How to travel the world for $50 a day

in #travel7 years ago

Many people dream of being able to throw their job in and travel the world.

What stops them?

Cost

Most people think the cost of doing that is prohibitive, I have done a blog on budgeting for a round the world trip, I wanted to delve a bit more today on how to stretch your money.

Flights

Use flight booking sites like Googles ITA Matrix (https://matrix.itasoftware.com/)

This allows you to pick a flight route, and look at a calendar of flight prices, this way you can pick when a flight is cheapest to book it.

Accomodation

Hostels and shared accommodation are your friend. Just because its a hostel does not mean its unclean or for 18 year olds.

Do your research, find a good place with good ratings and pick a shared room no bigger than 6 people in my opinion.

Good sites include hostel bookers and hostel world. the companies are both owned by the same parent company so listings are 80% the same.

Air bnb is your friend, on my last trip i used Air bnb everywhere.

Meals

Another advantage of an Air bnb or hostel is you can cook or prepare you own meals. This saves a fortune and not to mention keeps you so much healthier!

Activities

Find free activities to do, every city has free walking tours or museums you can visit.

Or better still get out of cities to see the wilderness and get out to nature, its all free! camp and save even more money on food and accommodation.

Choose destinations wisely

Some countries are more expensive than others. Here is my quick run down of countries to avoid if you are a traveller on a budget from my experience:

England, France, Italy, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland (western Europe and Scandinavia in general), USA, Brazil (Rio), Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Canada

I may not get a job when I get home

You may get made redundant next month... you never know whats around the corner so get out and enjoy life. You are in the privileged position that you are sat there reading blog posts on the internet, you can find a job, it may not be your perfect job, but if it allows you to follow your dream and travel the world is it worth it?
