SOUTH BALI
It was back in the 1970’s that south Bali was “discovered” by the western world as an idyllic tropical paradise. Off-the-beaten-track adventurers were initially attracted to the wonderfully friendly people, laid back, exotic culture and of course the beaches and oceans, some of which soon became world famous surf breaks. It remains the busiest area of Bali today, though many visitors are increasingly choosing destinations further inland now.
Kuta Beach was the centre of the action back then, and still remains the most popular surf beach on the island. But resorts and restaurants have spread both North and South along the coast, from Jimbaran and the Bukit to the south of the airport all they way up to the now-fashionable Canggu way up north towards the famously picturesque Tanah Lot. The entire western coastline is a beach lovers’ paradise, with facilities to suit all budgets and tastes. The restaurant scene in Seminyak is said to be one of the best value in the world, with fantastic dining from all corners of the globe available at very good prices.
Located on the other side of the peninsula, Sanur is a more peaceful option in South Bali, with a sleepier “village” type feel to the main tourist area, Jalan Tamblingan. The resort also has a long white sand beach stretching a few kilometres up the East coast, which s popular for kite-surfing and wind surfing enthusiasts. For a wider range of water-sports – jet-ski, flying fish, fishing trips, the peninsula of Tanjung Benoa is the location of choice
